QBL Lakewood (Calif.) beat Montana Hoops 79-63 Wednesday in the first round of the 224-team tournament. UNLV coach Bill Bayno was spotted in the gym, along with Marcus Camby (who played under Bayno while he was an assistant at UMass for John Calipari), and it was generally assumed that Bill was scouting Jason Kapano (6'-8" Sr. G/F/C) from Artesia High.
The Games at Las Vegas High auxiliary gymnasium were moved to Von Tobel Junior High on Wednesday because of a broken backboard, shattered on a dunk by Divon Clifton of the New Orleans Jazz. "I heard that we had a problem in the gym, and I didn't know what to think at first," said site director Phil Clarke. "But it was shattered. It didn't fall apart, but it was cracked in a million places. It was kind of pretty, actually." Pretty, perhaps, but unplayable. A three-man crew worked through the afternoon to repair the glass and games were scheduled to resume today in the gym.
Vegas Cheyenne's Demetrius Hunter (6'-2" Sr. G) and his Franklin Covey Express team from Utah beat Central Cal Sports Expressd 69-66 Wednesday. Unlike most of the other local Vegas high school players who play for their local teams, Hunter, on the advice of a friend who attends Utah's Dixie College, has been playing with the Express for the past month. The team has participated in several camps and tournaments together, including a Brigham Young camp and Utah coach Rick Majerus' camp. And Franklin Covey's practice schedule and preparation didn't hurt in their game with CCSE. Hunter initially struggled with his outside shot, but got more comfortable as the game developed and he won the game in the final seconds with a breakaway dunk and then a free throw.
We also managed to get our hands on some scores for a few of the games featuring teams from in and around Vegas, or teams on which local players also play:
