SoCal Only? How About Some NorCalHoops Stuff--(June 6, 1998)
Ok, so we're not geographically correct, but hey, it's about California Hoops isn't it. We've been getting some requests for NorCal news from time to time, and while we can't promise that this will be a regular thing, we're certainly happy to do so when things are slow. So here's a bunch of announcements and news tidbits we picked up from the Fremont, Alameda, and Oakland papers and from sources to pass along:
Tournament Stuff:
We learned that Holy Names is holding a girls tournament June
20-21 for 12 & under, 14 & under, and varsity divisions,
and a boys varsity and JV tournament on June 27-28. The
tournament is a four game guaranteed event, and the cost is $175.
All games will be played at Holy Names College. For more
information, call (510) 436-1583. And in other tournament stuff,
a bunch of schools need games. Will C. Wood High in Vacaville is
looking for a tournament entrant for a Dec. 11-12 a four-team
touranment, preferably a Divison I or II school. If you know of
any teams interested, call Chris Strong at (707) 453-6923. And
the McClymonds High varsity and junior varsity girls basketball
teams are also looking for preseason games and tournaments to
compete in during November and December. They are apparently willing
to travel. For more information, contact John Malone at (510)
879-8043. Oakland Tech also needs home or away games, including
tournaments for November and December. For more information, call
Hodari McGavock at (510) 633-2603 (beeper) or 870-3080 (days).
And finally, the Castlemont boys team, one of the traditionally
better teams in the Bay Area, is also seeking tournaments. The
Knights are looking for games, home or away, in December and
early January of 1999. For more information, call Johnny Lorigo
at (510) 879-3010 (ext. 485).
Bay Area Camps:
We've learned that there will be two camps held on the island of
Alameda this sumer. St. Joseph High boys basketball coach Gordie
Johnson and his staff will conduct funcamental and shooting camps
for boys and girls ages 9-15 from June 15 to July 24 at the St.
Joe's. An advanced camp for high school players will be held from
July 27-31. The cost is $100 for the fundamentals camp and $125
for the advanced session. For more information, contact Gordie
directly at (510) 521-0645 (evenings) or 814-7145 (days). And
another Alameda camp will also be headed by Alameda High varsity
girls coach Brad Thomas and boys coach Ed Ruiz. This one will
take place June 15-19, and will be for boys and girls third
through ninth grades (i.e., for younger players). For information
about this one, contact P.J. Astrup at (510) 337-0753. And in the
Berkeley area, Berkeley High Yellowjackets head coach Stelton
Mitchell will hold a fundamental camp July 6-10 at Berkeley High.
Players entering grades 7-12 are welcome to attend, provided they
pay the camp fee, which is $100 and includes t-shirt and a
basketball. Now there's something we've never heard of, a camp
giving out basketballs! For more information, call Mitchell at
(510) 644-6855.
Leagues:
The Oakland Parks & Recreation Department is looking for
teams and players for the Oakland Neighborhood Basketball League.
They're also looking for coaches and sponsors for the 27th Annual
ONBL. This is a great league, and boys and girls ages 10-18 will
compete on approximately 80 teams. The league takes place in late
June through early August. Call Frederick Morris at (510)
238-3493 for more information. And in another announcement we
picked up we learned that the Oakland City-Wide Elementary League
for boys and girls in grades 3-5 is looking for players. Games
are played on Tuesday afternoons, starting July 7. Apparently,
sign ups will be a local parks, but no further details were
available. And at the other end of the spectrum, we also learned
that there was a women's semi-pro league forming this month.
Apparently the league is looking for 8 teams, at a cost of $300
per team. Games will be played on Sundays, probably at Oakland
High. For more information or to sign up, call Michael Govan at
(925) 254-1932.
