Harvard-Westlake Wins Tournament--(June 26, 1998)
Yesterday we wrote about the Valley Sports Foundation's Summer Tipoff Classic tournament held at Harvard-Westlake. The semi-finals and the championship game were played yesterday, and in the semi, Harvard-Westlake, behind the solid play of Russell Lakey (5'-10" Jr. PG), Todd Kurihawa and big defensive efforts from Dan Kinzer, the Wolverines won, defeating Cleveland High and Kent Dennis. In the other semi, Muir defeated Burbank.
Harvard-Westlake then won the final, 58-54 over Muir. In the final, Russell Lakey scored 18 points and Anthony Naylor (6'-2" Jr. G/F) added another 14 in a huge offensive effort. Harvard-Westlake came back from from a 10-point deficit at one point, after playing the first half without Alex Holmes, who didn't arrive until the second half because of a football commitment (he also missed the Cleveland game) Our thanks to Larry Klein, assistant coach at H-W for providing us with some of the info about the tourney and the results. In the championship game, according to those who saw it, Kinzer (6'-6' Sr. C) had a huge defensive effort, blocking several shots; seems Dan has improved his footwork and is becoming a more complete player.
Next up for many of the teams who participated in the Valley Sports Tournament: The "War on the Floor" at Chatsworth High. We'll have the details soon.
Oh, and we also learned that the Crossroads team which showed up at the Summer Tip-off was indeed the Crossroads JV, since the big guns were all over at the Best in the West.
