Shahar
Gordon Likely To Play
For Cal Next Season--(June 5, 1998)
Regardless of whether Dirk Nowitzki comes to Cal or not, it now appears likely that Israeli recruit Shahar Gordon (6'-11" Sr. C) will play for Cal, whether he gets a scholarship or not. If Nowitzki gets the last remaining scholarship, then at least according to a published report today in the Daily Cal by Anil Podduturi, "contrary to previous assertions from the Gordon camp, the 245-pounder is expected to walk on his freshman year if Nowitzki finally arrives in Berkeley."
Gordon who played last season for St. Thomas More Prep School in Oakdale, Conn., committed verbally to Cal last month, but apparently has not signed an LOI, perhaps to keep the scholarship open for Nowitzki if he can actually withdraw his name from the draft and become eligible. Gordon continues to wait for a written waiver from the Israeli government that will defer his military commitment and allow him to play for Cal. If he doesn't get the deferment, he will have to serve two years in the Israeli army before attending college.
