Mick Cady Resigns At San Fernando--(June 3, 1998)
The LA Times is reporting that Mick Cady, has resigned as the coach of the San Fernando High boys' basketball team. Cady, who won a Southern Section III-A title at Notre Dame Sherman Oaks High in 1993, led San Fernando to the North Valley League title and finished 24-3 this season. Of course he had a little help from Devin Montgomery, Tyrone Purnell and others. The Tigers' success this season was the culmination of a four-year rebuilding program. San Fernando was 0-10 in Northwest Valley Conference play in Cady's first season in 1994-1995. Cady will continue on the faculty at San Fernando as a teacher.
Assistant Principal Hewitt Hornbeck also told the Times that Darryl McDonald, who has been an assistant coach at San Fernando for parts of eight seasons, is a candidate to replace Cady. However, McDonald was selected coach at Alemany last month. "I still have to sit down and figure out what I want to do," McDonald said. "There is some interest. I have talked with [San Fernando]."
Our guess is that Cady will opt to stay at San Fernando, and that Devin Montgomery and Jason Tubbs will be able to save a bundle in tuition by not transferring to Alemany.
