Summer Best in the West Starts Tomorrow--(June 23, 1998)

Wayne Merino is once again holding the summer version of the Best in the West Tournament which is run during the winter break, and Frank Burlison of the Orange County register notes that Mater Dei is one of the top four seeds in the 32-team Best in the West Shootout that gets under way at Artesia and Lakewood High Schools in Lakewood on Wednesday. In opening-day games at Artesia, the Monarchs (seeded third) have a 1:30 p.m. matchup with Damien of La Verne, while No. 1 seed Artesia will play San Pedro at 11 a.m., No. 2 Compton Dominguez will play West Covina at 7:45 p.m. and No. 4 Long Beach Poly will play Chula Vista Bonita Vista at 6:30. And, as Burlison notes, if the seeded teams all win their first round games, the Friday night quarterfinal games at Artesia would be: 5:30 p.m., Compton-Artesia; 6:45, Inglewood-L.B. Poly; 8 pm, Clovis West-Mater Dei, and 9:15, L.A. Fairfax-Dominguez. The semifinals are set for 8 and 9:15 Saturday night, and the championship at 9 p.m. Sunday.
