Draft Report
Mike Bibby Tanks His Clipper Tryout?--(June 11, 1998)
Most humorous piece heard this morning: On 1150 a.m., one of the reporters (can't remember which one) said that Mike Bibby, the Arizona point guard who led the Wildcats to a national championship as a freshman two seasons ago and is considered by many to be the best point guard available in this month's NBA draft, worked out for the Clippers' General Manager Elgin Baylor at USC on Wednesday. Sources tell us that it was the first NBA workout that they can remember where a player actually tried to tank his tryout in hopes that he would be drafted by a different team.
Probably didn't happen. The other
media, newspapers, radio and television are all reporting that
Bibby played well, and is in great shape. Expect him to get
drafted No. 1 by the Clippers. In need of a point guard (don't
tell Pooh), the Clippers will likely choose Bibby with the first
overall pick in the NBA draft on June 24.
"He's in great, great shape," Elgin Baylor told the LA
Times following the two-hour workout. "I've watched him
since he was in college and he has great court sense, he's a
wonderful passer . . . We're very pleased with what we saw
today."
