Spiece 1998 Run N' Slam-All Star
Classic Featuring Rockfish--(May 3,1998)

As most of you know, LA Rockfish (a team coached and put together by Dave "Rockfish" Benezra and Mark Mayemura) which is composed of some of the best players from the Rockfish Spring League which is played at Verbum Dei High School in Watts, flew to Indianapolis, Indiana on Thursday to play in a tournament. And it's not just any old tournament. We searched around and found out just exactly where they are. Here's what we know:

GYM RATS, Spiece and Converse proudly present... 1998 Run N' Slam All-Star Classic!

On May 1, 2,and 3, Gym Rats Inc. and Spiece Basketball teams will host a 17 years and under amateur basketball tournament at Mackey Arena, the Intercollegiate Athletic Facility, the Coed-Recreational Gymnasium, and Lambert Fieldhouse on the campus of Purdue University. Due to an additional 20 teams in the tournament this year, Benton Central High School will be hosting action on three courts. This tournament is co-sponsored by Spiece and Converse, and features some of the best high school basketball talent in the United States. The 100 team field is represented by teams from California, Utah, Texas, Iowa, Illinois, Michigan, Indiana, Tennessee, Pennsylvania, Georgia, Ohio, Arizona, New York, Alabama, Kansas, Nebraska, Missouri, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Delaware and Canada. Also attending will be nationally recognized scouting services that will insure the players get the recognition they deserve.

Play will begin Friday evening at 6:00pm, 8:00am Saturday, and 8:00am Sunday. The tournament format is pool play, with 25 pools of 4 teams. Each team in each pool will play one another, and then all teams will advance to a single elimination championship tournament on Saturday and Sunday. Each team is guaranteed at least 4 games, and could play as many as 10.

No admission will be charged to the public, however, you are encouraged to buy a program that features player rosters and business advertisements that will help off-set the tournament expenses. The public is encouraged to attend.

FORMAT

* Pool play of 100 teams - 25 pools of 4 teams each
* 15 teams of seniors-to-be
* 10 teams of juniors-to-be* Each team plays 3 pool games within their age group
* ALL TEAMS advance to a single elimination tourney within their age group, based on the following criteria...
1) The win-loss record from pool play.
2) Tie-breaker of identical records will be who won
head-to-head.
3) More than two teams with the same won-loss record...
a) Point spread in games played and won; 1 point for each point team defeats an opponent by (MAXIMUM of 20 points).
b) If a team forfeits in pool play, the winning team gets 1 point towards point spread.
4) Some teams seeded based on criteria and tournament format.
* Placement of teams to tourney will be done between 5:00pm and 6:00pm on Saturday at the tournament headquarters located inside Gate E of Mackey Arena.
* The tournament directors' decision is final on all placements.

RULES

* National Federation of High School Rules apply.
* (4) 8-minute quarters with 5-minute halftime, and a 10-minute pregame warm-up if court is running on schedule.
* Dunking allowed only on courts with break-away rims.
* If team is not on the floor at the required time, game will be forfeited.
* Ejected players and coaches are gone for the rest of the weekend.
* State Tournament and College Officials are being used. NO PROTESTS WILL BE ACCEPTED. All conflicts will be handled by the on-court officiating staff.
* Officiating points of interest will be...
* No trash talking.
* Minimize use of hand checking.
* Watch traveling against pressure defenses.
* Protect 3-point shooters after the shot.
* Avoid a free-throw shooting contest.

TOURNAMENT PLAY

Games will be played on 14 indoor courts across campus in four separate facilities. Court 1 is at Mackey Arena, courts 2-4 are in the Inter-Collegiate Athletic Facility, courts 5-11 are in the East/West gym of the Coed Recreational Facility, and courts 12-14 are in Lambert Fieldhouse. Due to the large number of teams this year, three courts have been added at local Benton Central High School. Courts 15-17 will be off campus at Benton Central.

The single elimination tournament will begin at 6:00pm on Saturday for both age groups with games running until around midnight. Then the tourney resumes Sunday morning at 8:00am, with the final game of both age groups at 3:30pm (17 and under at Mackey and 16 and under at the IAF).
