Occidental
Continues With More
Spring Signings--(May 13, 1998)
Occidental is a small D-III school, located just east of downtown Los Angeles (actually just near the end of the Arroyo Seco). It is the alma mater of former Presidential hopeful Jack Kemp, and is more noted for turning out top-flight scholars, future lawyers, business leaders, and power-brokers than it is for its athletic prowess. Oxy's basketball team plays in the highly competitive Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference against such schools as California Lutheran, Cal Tech, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, La Verne, Redlands, and the venerable Whittier Poets.
Oxy has been very busy during the spring signing season. Very busy. And very successful.
First Oxy signed David Murphy (5'-11" Sr PG) from Los Angeles Daniel Murphy High, an excellent choice both for David and Oxy. This week, Oxy got three letters: James Jones (6'-4" Sr. F) from Arlington High in Riverside, Tyler Okamoto (5'-11" Sr. PG) from Hacienda Height's Los Altos High, and finally from Josh long who is a 6'1" point guard/shooting guard type. And now Michael Miller is reporting that Oxy has reportedly gotten committments from Zach Burr (6'-6" Sr. PF) from Washington's Mt. Rainier High, and from Josh Rassmussen (6'-6" Sr. PF/C) from Napa High School. Both of these guys are just huge signings, literally (Zach is about 225 and Rassmussen is about 235). Looks like the Tigers will be giving the Poets' big guys, including George Gurrolla (6'-10" Fr. C) some trouble next year.
