Is It Too
Early To Plan For Next February?
Nike Extravaganza IV--(May 13, 1998)
Not really. Especially when you're talking about the Nike Extravaganza IV, hosted by Mater Dei, which this year will be moved slightly north, to the Cal State Fullerton Titan Gym. This past Nike Extravaganza III, which was held at UC Irvine's Bren Event Center, is chronicled in our tournament archives. Next year's date is February 6, 1999, so mark it on your calendar early.
We again want to thank our friend Tom "Mater Dei Mr. 6th Man" Wedmore for sending us the initial lineup of teams and matchups. The Nike IV is going to have some great matchups. You'll recall that the tourney is a sort of "dual" event, with the afternoon session devoted to "local" contests, and the "evening" session a more "national" matchup. Here's what's on tap:
Afternoon Session | ||
Artesia Pioneers | vs. | Capistrano Valley Cougars |
Santa Margarita Eagles | vs. | Servite Friars |
Long Beach Poly Jackrabbits | vs | Upland Highlanders |
Evening Session | ||
Bishop O'Dowd | vs. | Mater Dei Monarchs |
Dominguez Dons | vs. | Oak Hill Academy (VA) Warriors |
Glendora Tartans | vs. | Troy Warriors |
Miami Senior (FL) Stingarees | vs. | Ocean View Sea Hawks |
Frankly, if it were up to us, we'd move the Artesia v. Capo Valley game to the evening. Great matchups with Kapono, Fernandez and Martinez v. JJ Sola and Nate Hair (who will be transferring to Capo Valley). And Glendora v. Troy should be an interesting match, with top scoring Casey Jacobsen and the Clark twins matching up against Troy's top scorer Jerry Inzunza. Bishop O'Dowd is going to be the big mystery for now but they are always tough in NorCal.
Of course, as the next season approaches the lineups of teams might change, as might the schedule or the matchups, but for now this is what's being planned.
See you there.
