Bland, Prince, Young, Kapono: USA Basketball
Men's Junior Worlds Team Invitees--(May 8, 1998)

Get out the tuxedos and formals. The invitations have been sent. The prom's about to start. And Tony, Tayshaun, Ray and Jason have been invited to the dance.

Along with 30 other 18 & under players. All of them will attempt to earn one of 12 spots on the 1998 USA Basketball Men's Junior World Championship Qualifying Team. Jason Kapono (6'-8" Jr. SG/SF/PF) from Artesia High was one of only 9 high school juniors to be invited. Another was Jason Gardner (5'-11" Jr. PG) from Indianapolis, whose team lost to Shantay Legan's Rockfish squad at the Spiece Run N' Slam last weekend in Indianapolis.

The 1998 USA Men's Junior World Championship Qualifying Team will try later this summer to earn one of three qualifying spots from the Pan American Zone for the 1999 FIBA Men's Junior World Championship at the Confederation of Pan American Basketball Associations (COPABA) Men's Junior World Championship Qualification Tournament, taking place July 6-13 in Santiago, Dominican Republic.

It's probably no surprise that Tony Bland was invited as one of the invitees: Syracuse University head coach Jim Boeheim will be the head coach of the 1998 USA Men's Junior World Championship Qualifying Team. Arizona State University head coach Rob Evans and Oklahoma Christian University head coach Dan Hays will be the assistant coaches.

According to USA Basketball, the Men's Junior team is "open to any male athlete 18-years-old or younger (born on or after January 1, 1980)." The 1998 USA Men's Junior World Championship Qualifying Team will train June 25- July 3 in Syracuse, N.Y.

Five of the invitees competed on the 1998 USA Basketball Men's Junior Select National Team at the Nike Hoop Summit in San Antonio, Texas this past March: Forward Jason Capel (North Carolina / St. John's At Prospect Hall), forward Al Harrington (St. Patrick's / Elizabeth, N.J.), center Kevin Lyde (Temple / Oak Hill Academy), forward Quentin Richardson (DePaul / Whitney Young) and guard Ray Young (UCLA / St. Joseph Notre Dame / Alameda, Calif.). Tayshaun Prince had been named to the team but was unable to compete due to the injury he sustained during the CIF playoffs in the Southern Section semifinals.

Three of 10 finalists for the 1998 Naismith Prep Player of the Year Award will also attend the 1998 USA Basketball Men's National Team Trials: Capel; Harrington, who won the 1998 Naismith Player of the Year Award; Prince, and Joe Przybilla (Minnesota) who will be trying out for the Men's National Team for the USA Goodwill Games.
