Carloes Harper Leaving CSUN for D-II or NAIA--(May 11,1998)
Carloes Harper, a freshman guard for Cal State Northridge has asked for and been granted his release from from the school by Coach Bobby Braswell and is taking visits to Division II and NAIA schools. Harper visited Cal State San Bernardino two weeks ago, and visited UC Riverside this past weekend; he will visit The Master's College next weekend. Transferring to another Division I school would require Harper to sit out one season, so don't look for him to transfer to Riverside, which has applied to be moved up to D-I status from D-II effective as soon as the fall of 1999; it's possible that since they are still technically a D-II school that a transfer would allow him to play next season, so he would effectively get the advantage of D-I transfer status without having to sit. And, he'd get a UC degree to boot. Not that there's anything wrong with a CSUN degree.
Division II and NAIA have no restrictions on transfer players who may play without sitting out a year. Braswell said he was disappointed, and also noted that Harper would be welcome to return to the team, even if he leaves. Braswell said that even if Harper does not return, he will not recruit anyone else to replace him.
Harper was an All-Valley player at Canoga Park High. He played very little this last season at Northridge, averaging just 1.6 points and 1.2 rebounds in 5.4 minutes a game. He is the older brother of Charles Harper (6'-3" Jr. SG/SF) also from Canoga Park High, who averaged 11.7 ppg this season. Younger brother Charles was also the City Section (Valley Region) leader in rebounds at 12.2 per game, and was second in blocked shots per game (3.2 per game).
