Coach Takes Over
Girls' Program At Mater Dei--(May18, 1998)
Ollie Martin, a longtime girls' basketball coach, has been named the coach at Mater Dei, athletic director Geri Campeau said Friday. Martin met with players on Friday after taking over the position previously held by Campeau. It brings together one of the county's most successful programs with one of its most successful coaches. "The biggest reason we hired Ollie was because to run a top-notch program, you need a top-notch coach, and he has proven himself," said Campeau, who will be the assistant coach. Martin was also hired as a full-time teacher at the school. He was a women's assistant at Southern California College the past two seasons after compiling a 186-87 record in 10 seasons at Ocean View. His 1996 team, which lost to Brea Olinda in the Division II-A final and the Southern California regionals, finished 23-9. Martin, 48, led the Seahawks to five league championships, three in the Sunset League and two in the Golden West. Martin said the opportunity to coach at Mater Dei was one he could not ignore. Mater Dei girls athletic director Geri Campeau coached the Monarchs last season, taking over for her sister Mary Hauser. Campeau will be an assistant coach next season
