Comings & Goings In LA Girls' Hoops:
Flot In, Quinn Out--(May 13, 1998)
Michael Flot, an assistant to head coach Brian "BTExpress" Taylor on Harvard-Westlake's 1997-98 Southern Section Division III-A championship team has been hired as the girls' head coach at Los Angeles High. Congratulations Michael.
And Woodbridge's girls' head coach Pat Quinn said that he was fired by the administration at the school last week. In three seasons at Woodbridge, Quinn's teams had a 68-20 record, 54-7 his first two seasons, and they successfully defended their Division II state title his first year. Apparently four players and their parents refused to meet with Quinn after the season to discuss postseason goals, an indication that Quinn was out of touch with the players. Dave Cowen, Woodbridge's athletic director, said the school decided to "go in a new direction." and that the decision to fire Quinn was made by a committee consisting of Cowen, principal Greg Cops, and assistant principal Ken Bailey. He cited as one of the chief factors that Quinn was only a part-time coach, with a full time teaching job at Saddleback High. "I want someone who is here on campus who is more accessible to the girls, a coach who has a line of communication that is there on a continual basis," Cowen said.
