Calvin Byrd Named Assistant
Basketball Coach At UC Irvine--(May 18, 1998)

Calvin Byrd, a former player at Villanova University, has been named an assistant basketball coach at UC Irvine by Head Coach Pat Douglass. Byrd has been assistant varsity coach at St. Joseph Notre Dame High School in Alameda, California, the past two seasons and also served as the school's head junior varsity coach this year. He played four years at Villanova (1989-93), serving as a co-captain in 1993, where he received the team's Best Defensive Player award. Byrd played professionally in Switzerland for two seasons (1994-96) for the La Chaux-de-Fonds club team, averaging 35 points and 11 rebounds per game. He also served as assistant coach for the team. He played one season (1993-94) for Pottsville, Penn., in the Atlantic Basketball Association and helped his team to the league championship that year. Byrd was inducted into St. Joseph Notre Dame High School's Sports Hall of Fame in 1994 and he was a McDonald's All-American in 1989. At UC Irvine, Byrd replaces Cameron Dollar, who resigned to become the head coach at Southern California College in Costa Mesa.
