Shawn Lett:
An Overlooked, Underrecruited
Hot Shooter--(April 23,1998)
We don't often single out players, but in this case, we are just absolutely amazed that no one from either the WAC or WCC, or maybe even some rebuilding Pac-10 program like Oregon or OSU, hasn't picked up on Shawn Lett (5'-11" Sr. SG/PG) Quartz Hill. This guy is being completely overlooked by most schools. He is, we hear, looking at several D-II schools, but this kid is definitely a Mid D-1 prospect, and deserves some attention from the some better programs.
Shawn hasn't gotten the attention we think he deserves, and we're not sure why that is, except for a lack of local coverage for Quartz Hill. But consider this: He can score! He averaged No. 5 overall in the Southern Section (Valley area) in scoring, averaging 24.6 points per game, right behind Mark Hull (USCB), Ruben Douglas (Arizona) and Matt Moore (LMU). He was the top assist leader for QH, and averaged 2.8 steals per game. He was named to the Daily News' All-Area team.
And best of all, he's fully qualified, having taken and passed the SAT on his first try. He's taking the test again to improve his score, but that's just because he wants to improve his chances of getting into a better academic institution.
Someone should sign this guy, or live to regret it.
