Fullerton's
Jason Cunningham
Makes Appeal For Eligibility--(April 22,1998)
A five-member NCAA subcommittee is considering a second appeal by Cal State Fullerton to grant basketball player Jason Cunningham an extra year of eligibility.
Cunningham (6'-5" Sr. F) played for the Titans in 1997-98. A 1992 graduate of Los Alamitos High, he redshirted at CSF in 96-97. Prior to that he attended West Ark Community College in Fort Smith, Ark., UNLV and Fullerton College.
An original appeal by CSF on Cunningham's behalf was denied, Kevin Fite, a member of the NCAA's student-athlete reinstatement staff, said last Friday.
"We receive about 100 requests like this a year," Fite said. "Of that number, about 20 are denied and of that 20, perhaps five win reinstatement from the committee." There is no timetable for the subcommittee chaired by Tulane athletic director Sandy Barbour to render its decision, Fite said.
Cunningham has said he was misguided by an academic adviser in high school over required course work.
