Dollar, Er, Make That
Head Coach Mr. Dollar Goes To SCC--(April 9,1998)
Cameron Dollar, who was an assistant coach at UC Irvine this past season, was selected as the head coach at NAIA Southern California College, located in Costa Mesa today. Dollar, 22, replaces Bill Reynolds, who retired at the end of last season. The Vanguards, who play in the NAIA's Golden State Athletic Conference, finished 19-15 last season. Dennis Keane is their only returning starter, so one of Dollar's first tasks will be recruiting. He begins his new job Monday. He's already hired Michael Jones, a former assistant at Pasadena City College, for his staff.
Even as he was helping UCLA win the national championship in 1995, Cameron Dollar imagined the day he would coach. As a sophomore, Dollar led UCLA to its 11th NCAA championship in 1995. In the title game, he stepped into the point guard role in place of starter Tyus Edney, who sprained his wrist in the semifinals. Dollar was also a member of three Pac-10 Conference championship teams.
SCC Athletic Director Bob Wilson said everyone on the Christian college campus was impressed with Dollar. "He came highly recommended and brings to our program a fresh new approach," Wilson said.
"I'm 22 and I've done pretty much everything I've ever wanted to do," Dollar was reported saying. "I've played against some of the best players in the country and had the opportunity to work alongside of and play for some of the greatest coaches in the country, so intimidation is not a strong suit of mine," he said. "I have the utmost confidence in what I've learned."
