More Daily News Awards:
All Valley Area Teams Named--(April 7, 1998)

Ruben Douglas is the Player of the Year. Ok, so who else did the Daily News pick as their other "All-Area Team" members. We thought you'd never ask. Here's the list with some details. The stuff in quotes is from the Daily News, not us:

First Team:

Rafael Berumen (6'-8" Jr. C) Simi Valley--"One of the top young big men on the West Coast. Averaged 21.0 points and 10.8 rebounds. He enjoyed numerous stretches in which he was unstoppable."

Mark Hull (6'-8" Sr. F) Hoover High--"Ended a terrific career by averaging 27.8 points and 13.8 rebounds. Improved considerably over four years, especially with his leadership and rebounding".

Daniel Bobik (6'-6" Sr. F) Newbury Park High--" Competitive drive makes him fun to watch, and he'll get better in the years ahead at Brigham Young University. Averaged 20.6 points, 8.3 rebounds and 5.6 assists."

Scott Long (6'-5" Sr. F) Chaminade Prep High--"Headed to the Naval Academy next year. Led the Eagles to the Division III-A Southern Section title and Division III state quarterfinals while averaging 15.4 points and eight rebounds."

J.T. Stotts (5'-10" Sr. G) Hart High--"Fierce competitor, excellent 3-point shooter who willed Hart to the Foothill League title. Averaged 23.6 points."

Gilbert Arenas (6'-3" Jr. G) Grant High--" Destined for greatness. Averaged 29.8 points, 8l7 rebounds, and 5.7 assists per game."

Second Team

Branduinn Fullove (6'-5" So. G) Simi Valley--"Stepped up big time in the playoffs.

Mike West (6'-7" Sr. F) Bell-Jeff--"Averaged 21.2 points and 14.0 rebounds"

Jerrohn Jordan (6'-8" Sr. C) Valencia--"Put together a nice year while averaging 19.1 poins and 10.2 rebounds.

Kevin Lawrence (6'-7" Sr. F) Moorpark High--"Ended a fin career by averaging 23.1 points and 12.8 rebounds"

Matt Moore (6'-7" Sr. C) La Canada--" Averaged 25.9 points and 9.0 rebounds

Devin Montgomery (6'-0" Sr. G) San Fernando--"The North Valley League MVP averaged 18.5 points, 4.5 assists per game.

Scott Borchart (6'-7" Fr. C) Chaminade--"Did not play like a 15 year old while averaging 15 points and 6.9 rebounds."

Third Team

Emmanuel Evans (6'-3" Sr. F) Birmingham--"Averaged 19.5 points per game."

Kent Dennis (6'-3" Sr. F) Cleveland--"Key transfer was the Cavaliers' top scorer."

Russell Lakey (5'-10" So. G) Harvard-Westlake--"Averaged 22.4 points in first year."

Harold Shevlin (6'-4" Sr. G) Taft--"All-around player averaged 16.1 points"--Big note here--Daily News had him at "Montclair Prep". That's wrong. He was at Taft. And he's 6'-4" not 6'-2". At least they got his name right.

Rocky Steryo (6'-2" Sr. G) Montclair Prep--" 3-point shooter supreme."--Note: Now Rocky is 6'-2" and from Montclair. And he never met a shot he didn't like. A great perimeter player.

George Wrighster (6'-4" Jr. F) Sylmar--"Helped the Spartans win the City Section 3-A title."

Shawn Lett (5'-8" Sr. G) Quartz Hill--"High scoring rebel." Note: C'mon Vince, you can do better than that.

Kerry Yates (6'-2" Sr. G) Palmdale--"Top player in the Golden League."

Marcus Helfman (6'-6" Sr. F) Agoura--"Will play football at Cal, can also play basketball."

Congratulations to all of the players selected on a great year.

Oh, and by the way, the Coaches of the Year were Chaminade's Jeff Young (boys) and Mellissa Hearlihy (Alemany).
