UC Davis
Down To Four Candidates
To Replace Williams--(April 28,1998)
UC Davis' basketball program announced last Friday that they are down to four finalists for the UC Davis head basketball coaching job. Assistant basketball coaches Brian Fogel of UC Davis and Tony Marcopulos of the University of the Pacific are among four finalists for UCD's head-coaching job. The Aggies have pared a field of 40 in seeking a replacement for Bob Williams, who became head coach at UC Santa Barbara after guiding the Aggies to the NCAA Division II championship in March.
Fogel has been an assistant coach at Davis since 1995. He also has been an assistant at San Francisco State, Cal and Sonoma State and was head coach at Skyline College in Oakland in the 1994-95 season. Marcopulos has been a UOP assistant since 1988. The other two finalists are Mike Legarza, head coach at Canada College in Redwood City for eight seasons, and Stanley Stewart, associate head coach at San Jose State since 1989. Legarza has a 211-45 record at Canada and was named state community college coach of the year this past season. He also was an assistant at the University of San Diego, Fresno State and Nevada. Stewart also has been an assistant at UC Santa Barbara, USC and Los Angeles Southwest College. The school said it hopes to announce a new coach sometime next week.
