Another Matt Barnes Story:
All Sacramento Teams--(April 1,1998)

Well, the news about Matt Barnes (6'-9" Sr. C) from Fair Oaks Del Campo High, is really mixed today. Not only was he the subject of an apparently racially motivated graffitti incident at Del Campo, but he was also slighted somewhat by the local media in the selection of the all-area teams. So just how good is this hot top UCLA signee/prospect? Well, apparently he had a better football season than he did in basketball. He only made the Sacramento Bee's second team of "All-Area" (Sacramento) players. Here's the list, with Barnes mentioned way down near the bottom, as published March 24, 1998 by the Bee:

Sacramento Boy's First Team

Damon Polhill: Encina

The guard led the Bulldogs to their first Golden Empire League championship this decade, averaging 21 points, six assists, six rebounds and four steals. Scored 47 points against River City with eight three-pointers.

Tyrone Patterson: McClatchy

Few players in the section could get up and down the floor like the Lions' star, who helped bring a Metro co-championship by averaging 18 points and five steals. Took over late to beat Laguna Creek in playoffs.

DeShawn Jordan: Jesuit

The third-year starter led the Metro co-champions in scoring with 17 points per game. He also provided superb defense and invaluable leadership for the Marauders, who reached the NorCals twice in this tenure.

Dominic Callori: Elk Grove

The senior led the Delta League championships in scoring (21 points), rebounds (eight) and assists (six) as one of the most versatile and skilled players in the section. Kept team together early as some players were still in football.

Michael Carter: Folsom

Rated by his peers as perhaps the top point guard in the section, the left-hander led the Bulldogs with 21 points a game,scoring on runners, drives and three-pointers for a team that handed Galt its only league loss.
