Cal Makes It Official. . . Dennis
"The Sheriff" Gates Signs LOI--(April 14,1998)

Ok, so it's never official until its official. Dennis Gates (6'-4" Sr. G) from Whitney Young in Chicago has signed his letter of intent and mailed it to Cal, where it was received by Coach Ben Braun (unless of course he really is in Germany trying to ink Dirk Nowitzki, but that's another story). Actually it was Braun who made the announcement that Gates had signed, after saying this last weekend that he had verabally committed.

As we previously reported, Gates is best known for helping the Whitney Young Dolphins to a 30-1 record this last season and a No. 2 mythical ranking from USA Today. He's a defensive standout, known as "The Sheriff". Gates is considered a versatile wing player, who can either man the point guard spot or play shooting guard. This last season he averaged 11.1 points, 3.3 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 2.5 steals, and finished his high school career by earning MVP honors in the Illinois state championship game with a team-high 20 points.
