LA Times Selects City Section
Players Of The Year --(March 27, 1998)

Yesterday, the Los Angeles Times, in the form of Gary Klein, selected it's players of the year in Southern Section and in City Section. And the big surprise was the selection of the City 4A player of the year, David Bluthenthal, not because David didn't deserve it, but because up until the State Division I Championship game between Westchester and Alameda St. Joe's, the frontrunner was Brandon Granville. Well, things change, and I'm certain that Ed Azzam's recommendation had something to do with the selection, not to mention David's great performance in the finals.

The Times article stated that "A panel of Southland sportswriters selected teams for the 4-A and 3-A divisions based on coaches' nominations and personal observations." Ok. . . . We agree, but actually, the selection could have been any one of three Westchester starters, Bluthenthal, Granville or Tony Bland, and possibly even Albert Miller, who has said he'll play for Washington State.

The 4-A team features 17 seniors and three juniors. Bluthenthal, who averaged 21 points a game, was joined by Westchester teammates Tony Bland, Albert Miller and Brandon Granville on the 4-A team. Manual Arts, the 4-A runner-up placed two players on the squad--Ricky Duff and junior James Wright.

Here's the City 4A Team:

Tony Bland (Westchester) David Bluthenthal (Westchester) Brandon Granville (Westchester)
Curtis Slaughter (Washington) B.J. Lafitte (Washington) Brandon Hawkins (Crenshaw)

Marc Edwards (Dorsey) Greg Jefferson (Fairfax) Gilbert Arenas (Grant)
Mike Cortez (Carson) Oliver Ware (Banning) Keron Wilkerson (North Hollywood)

On the 3A side of City Section, here's what Klein and the Times had to say, selecting Allen Kordich of San Pedro as the player of the year; Kordich, a senior, averaged 24.5 points a game:
