Section Playoffs: Division I-A
Glendora Defeats J.W. North 77-57--(March 4, 1998)
The Glendora Tartans, with the win, will face San Bernardino Pacific, a 70-69 winner over Santa Ana Mater Dei Saturday in the 1A championship game Saturday at 6:45 p.m. at the Anaheim Pond. Glendora is making its forth appearance in a CIF title game in the 1990s. The Tartans lost to Santa Ana Mater Dei in the 1996 finals.
North (17-11) came out firing,
scoring the game's first nine points as Glendora committed three
turnovers in the opening two minutes. But the Tartans gradually
pulled back and trailed 19-15 at the end of the first quarter. A
15-4 run to close the second quarter gave Glendora a 37-28 lead.
Jacobsen, a junior shooting guard-small forward, scored 20 points
in the first half and the Tartans didn't let the Huskies any
closer than eight
points in the third quarter.
And In one of the more ludicrous events of the year, the game last night in Division I-A semifinals was delayed more than one hour and six minutes, moved from one gym to another, and most of the spectators couldn't see the end of the game, because the auxiliary gym (aka the "girls' gym") couldn't hold more than a few hundred.
But that didn't stop Casey Jacobsen from scoring a game-high 37 points Tuesday night as top-seeded Glendora (29-1) won despite a delay of one hour and six minutes caused by condensation from water pipes dripping on the gymnasium floor. In four playoff games, Jacobsen has scored 184 points, a staggering average of 46.0 points per game.
Glendora led 54-38 after three quarters when play was halted. Play was moved to the auxiliary gym and 75 percent of the estimated 1,000 fans in attendance could not enter the smaller gym.
"Unfortunately, a lot of our fans had to drive an hour and a half to get here and they couldn't even see the end of the game," Glendora coach Mike LeDuc said. "In my opinion and (J.W. North) coach (Mike) Bartee's opinion, they could've wiped the floor and played on it, but the officials felt differently. I don't know what I would've done if I was in their shoes." The officials explored the option of finishing the game at Riverside Poly High School, 17 miles away, but decided on the auxiliary gym instead. Officials said the pipes were wet from condensation caused by excessive heat created from the overflow crowd.
Before the game site was moved, officials first moved the fans outside as water dripped three feet in front of the benches where both teams sat.
Forward Chris Clark scored 21 points for the Tartans and grabbed 11 rebounds. North was led by James Taylor's 13 points and seven rebounds.
