Southern Section Playoffs: Division II-A
Semifinal Previews--(March 2, 1998)

Here are the semifinal matchups for tomorrow night. These will be two of the best around. No.1 overall and No. 1 in Region I Dominguez against the No. 2 seeded team in Region IV Dos Pueblos. That game will be played at Compton College on Tuesday March 3 at 7:30 pm, and it will be something of a "home" game for Dominguez which is just down the road, but has played more than a few games in this venerable gym. In the other matchup, Redondo Union will play Muir from Pasadena at Occidental College at 7:30 pm on March 3.

Zach Bruce (6'-5" Jr. F)
Regelle Aguilar (6'-6" Sr. F)
Kapona O'Neal 6'-7" Sr. C)

We really like Dos Pueblos but you gotta feel for them, at least a little. They may be our own personal "sentimental" favorties, but they sure aren't the favorites on paper or with the crowd at Compton College tomorrow night to win this one. Tyson Chandler is one of those players who people will flock to see, because it's not everyday that you see a 7'-0" kid who is still just a kid but who can play a man's game. And Tayshaun Prince, Mr. All-Everything, all-world, Mr. McDonald's All-American winner not just nominee, threatens to personally take Dos Pueblos out from the start. There's no doubt in our mind that Shantay Legans will probably be the best point guard on the floor, but then it should be interesting watching Shantay go up against Willie Hurst, and possibly Tayshaun if he decides to do his "point" thing. Other than Tyson, who is at least 4 or 5 inches taller than the next tallest Charger, Dominguez and Dos Pueblos matchup about evenly (again on paper at least). But Dominguez has been through some pretty tough wars and played some pretty big-time opponents this year. Whether all that preparation will mean victory is open to debate. We think this could be one of the most exciting games of the year, and it's one you shouldn't miss.

Game 2-- No. 2 Redondo Union v. Muir

Redondo's probable starters:

Brian Morris (6'-0" Sr. G)
Tyler Hoffman (6'-3" Sr. G)
Marcus Moore (6'-4" Jr. SG/F)
Andrew Zahn (6-9" So. C) and
Levi Stauffer (6'-3" Sr. F)

Muir's Probabl Starters

Jeffrey Washington (6'-0" Jr SG)
Joe Bakhoum (6'-0" Sr PG)
Darelle Rowe (5'-10" So SG)
John Parker (6'-5" Jr PF)
Nate Johnson (6'-3" Jr SF)

The reserves

Titus Hunt (6'-4" Jr G/F)
Ryan Kittel (6'-0" Sr SG)
Dylan Mathis (6'-5" So F)
Mike Nazerian (6'-0" Sr G)
Jesse Webster (6'-6" Jr F/C)
Walter White (6'-4" So F)
Justin Ergieger (6'-4" Jr F)

The reserves:

(we're not sure. . . we do know
the name of only one player:

Kh'Mori House (5'-10" Sr SG)

We've seem some of the teams from this neck of the woods. And we've also seen the Redondo Seahawks. And frankley, if this game is close, we'd be pretty surprised. Redondo's Tyler Hoffman, a senior guard, is a credible player with a nice stroke, who scored 17 of his 24 points in the first two quarters on Friday night. He shot 5 for 8 in the first quarter, and hit one of his three three-pointers with eight seconds left in the first quarter. Andrew Zahn has absolutely no counterpart and we doubt that they'll be aboe to stop the big man. But Muir has some great shooters, and it will be all that the Seahawks can do to stop them.

Again, these games get underway tomorrow, so don't miss them.
