Finals: Division V Boys'-- Pacific Hills
Wins Title Over Brookside Christian--(March 22, 1998)
Pacific Hills 69, Brookside Christian 52:
The media notes for this one provided by the CIF were simple and straightforward. Here they are:
It took three overtimes, but Pacific Hils finally edged Horizon Dan Diego, 81-79 in the Southern Regional finals to advance to its third championship game. Pacific Hills lost to Ripon Christian in 1994 and to Menlo School in 1989 when Pacific Hills was known as Bel-Air Prep. Brookside Christian makes it's first appearance in the finals and beat Rincon Valley Christian, 47-46 to advance. The only loss of the seasons for the Knights cam in game number five against Modesto Christian 67-57.
The Official Program, available to the public was a bit more informative. Here's what it said:
If this game goes into overtime, you won't want to bet against the Pacific Hills Bruins. In the Southern California finals, Pacific Hills (27-2) knocked off top seeded Horizon in three overtimes, 81-79.
The Bruins also went three overtimes to beat Montclair Prep in the Southern Seciton Division V-AA semifinals and took overtime to beat Santa Clara Oxnard in the Southern Section V-AA final. Ryan Abrahams had a huge game against Horizon. The 6-foot-3 junior poured in 38 points after averaging 210 points a game during the regular season.
The Bruins also look to 6'-5" Rodney Harvey in the middle and senior Conrad Adamczak at forward. Harvey, a huge presence inside, dropped in 16 points and grabbed eight boards during the season while Adamczak was good for 18 points and 11 rebounds in the final against Horizon.
Brookside Christian of Stockton makes its first appearance in the state finals after edging top-seeded Rincon Valley Christian Santa Rosa 47-46 in the NorCal final. In only its second year of existence, Brookside rolled to a 31-1 record with the only loss coming against Modesto Christian. The Knights get 16 points a game from 6'-2" junior guard Matt Tealdi and 14.1 from 6'-6" sophomore forward Sante Gayle. It was Gayle who lifted Brookside past Rincon Valley with 15 points.
The rosters for both teams were as follows:
Brookside
Christian Roster: Sante
Gayle (6'-6" So. C) |
Pacific Hills
Roster: Kamaal
Davis (6'-1" Sr. G) |
Conrad Adamczak had 23 points and nine rebounds for Pacific Hills of Los Angeles. Brookside (31-2) had won 27 consecutive games but couldn't contend with the quickness of Pacific Hills (28-7), which won its first state title in its third appearance. The first appearance was in 1989, when the school was known as Bel Air Prep. In 1989, when Pacific Hills was named Bel Air Prep, it lost to Atherton Menlo and in 1994 PH lost to Ripon Christian.Brookside Christian reached the championship game in only its second year of existence. But Pacific Hills of Bel-Air had too much depth, quickness and size for 2-year-old Brookside Christian of Stockton. Conrad Adamczak, a 6-5 senior forward, scored 11 of his 23 points in the second half as the Bruins snapped a 27-game winning streak for Brookside which is coached by former Skyline of San Bruno community college All-American Timothy Dunham
Pacific Hills broke open a close game late in the first half with an 11-0 run that extended into the third quarter. And Pacific Hills, for the first time in three weeks, didm't have to play an overtime period to win a game. Pacific Hills won the Southern Section V-A semifinal by defeating top-seeded Montclair Prep, 83-82, in triple overtime. The Bruins won the Section Championship title two days later with an 82-76 overtime victory over Santa Clara Last Saturday, Pacific Hills advanced to the state final with an 81-79 triple-overtime victory over San Diego Horizon, a team that was heavily favored to represent Southern California in the state championship game. And for one half of Saturday's game against Brookside Christian it looked as though Pacific Hills might be heading toward another close finish. The Bruins were behind, 24-19, with 2:30 left in the second quarter after Brookside Christian's Orlando Evans made a bomb from outside for three of his team-high 20 points. But Pacific Hills closed with an 8-0 run to take a 26-24 lead at halftime. The Bruins started the third quarter with another 8-0 run. "We stepped up in the second half," said Pacific Hills forward Conrad Adamczak. Junior forward Ryan Abrahams scored 16 points, junior center Rodney Harvey added 10 and junior point guard Brandon Owens had nine for the Bruins.
