CIF State
Playoffs: Northern Region
Division I Brackets--(March 10, 1998)
Southern
California vs. Northern California Champions
Saturday 3/21
ARCO Arena, Sacramento
8:00 p.m.
Well, it looks like both Carmichael Jesuit and Oakland McClymonds are in, and Fremont is out. If you want to know what the dispute was about, then read our prior article on the Northern California bracketing dispute.
These were announced today at 1:00 pm. When we contacted the CIF office at 12:30 p.m. this afternoon, we were told that the powers that be were still "meeting to determine the seeding" and no one had any information who could speak with us. About a half an hour later, the seeding and bracketing was announced, and so Jesuit now has about 5 and a half hours to get ready for its game against No. 1 seeded Alameda St. Joseph. Presumably the committee picked Dublin H.S. because it's about halfway between Carmichael and Alameda, and thus will reduce the travel time and spread the burden, even though Alameda is technically entitled to "home court" as the no. 1 seed in the bracket. At least that's what the (*) is supposed to indicate. McClymonds plays De La Salle, St. Ignatius plays San Francisco's Galileo, and Vallejo plays San Jose's Bellarmine High.
Frankly, now that the schedules have been announced and the games will be played on the 10th (tonight) we don't know why the CIF has moved the semi-finals to Friday the 13th, to be followed the next day by the finals, where in every other division the games will allow the players a day off to prepare for the final on Saturday the 14th. But then with all the controversy, maybe they're anticipating another legal filing by Fremont. Who knows? We don't, that's for sure. What we do know is that the games which have been scheduled will be exciting and will feature some of the top talent in the region. If you're up that way, don't miss it.
