CIF State Playoffs: Southern Region
Division III First Round Games--(March 11, 1998)

Southern California vs. Northern California Champion,
3/21 at ARCO Arena,
Sacramento, 3:00 p.m.

As a reminder, we'll keep the plug for the State Finals at the top of each of the reports for the respective regions.

In Division III, there were no real upsets. Ocean View beat Bishop Montgomery, and Washington Union beat San Diego's St. Augustine, to set up a great game between the Von Webb coached Washington Union team and Ocean View's Tony Dow & Co. In the other half of the bracket, Chaminade just killed poor Barstow, setting up the matchup with USDHS, which should be one of the best games this season, as both teams feature huge front lines, and quick point guards. Here are the details of what happened yesterday:

Division III

Ocean View 54, Bishop Montgomery 48

Ocean View, which won the section Division III-AA championship last weekend, appeared sluggish at times but got a big fourth quarter from Tony Dow, who scored seven of his 11 points in the quarter. They also got a great second half from Garid Beeler who scored 8 points in two minutes at the end of the third and beginning of the fourth quarters and finished with a team high 13 points, leading Ocean View pas Bishop Montgomery in the first round of the State Regionals at Ocean View. The win gave Ocean View a record of 26-4 and continues improving this teams record for the school season high in victories. Ocean View will now face Washington Union of Fresno, which is 25-3 with it's win over St. Augustine of San Deigo last night.

Beeler, a transfer from Division IV's Calvary Chapel (which seems to have done fine without him until last night) has played very well in the last two weeks of tournament play. Last night, there were 46 seconds left to play in the third, OV had a two point lead; Beeler hit a crucial three pointer to extend the lead, and then twenty seconds later he scored again on a drive in the lane and was fouled, hitting the free throw to give Ocean View a 40-32 lead. Beeler then opened the fourth quarter by stealing the ball, and hit a layup off the break to give Ocean View it's biggest lead of the game at 10, 42-32.

After opening up the 10-point lead, Ocean view then made six of eight free throws in the final 1 1/2 minutes to hold off visiting Torrance Bishop Montgomery, 54-48, in a Division III first-round game. "Garid wasn't looking for it in the first half," Ocean View coach Jim Harris told the LA Times. "I had to yell at him to look to score, then he goes on that tear. "The whole team was in a funk, a daze, in the first half. That was the first time all season I've had to yell at them at halftime. I'm happy we advanced, but we better get it together or we'll be in trouble in the next round."

For Ocean View, the scoring was done by Dow with 11, Hatch with 7, Martini 10, Garid Beeler with 13, Kiemle with 4, Lawson 1, and Hanson 8.

Washington Union (Fresno) 77, St. Augustine (SD) 46

We're still waiting for either the Bee to report this game, or for Pat McKinney to pick up the details later today. We'll post it up as soon as we get something. But for now here's the score.

Chaminade 102, Barstow 68

Chaminade just continues rolling. And rolling. Kind of like a steamroller without any brakes. Tuesday night, before a packed crowd watching in the gym, and before many others watching on the school's closed circuit TV system, Chaminade hammered Barstow to take the victory by 38 points in the first round of Division III State Championship Southern Region playoffs. Chaminade is now 28-1 on the year, and has won 25 straight. Barstow, , the Southern Section Division III-AA runner-up, ends its season at 26-4. This is the fourth time in postseason play that Chaminade has won by won by more than 30 points. Chaminade will travel to play University in San Diego on Thursday in one of two regional semifinals.

Chaminade clearly dominated from the start. The Eagles started 6'-7" freshman center Scott Borchart, 6'-6" Justin Beach, 6'-5" Scott Long, and with 6'-10" JJ Todd as a potential threat off the bench, there was no way that Barstow could hope to have any chance of utilizing an inside game. No Aztec starter was taller than 6 feet. The only serious threat Chaminade had during the game was the possiblity that they might lose Justin Beach or Scott Long to injuries. Both of them finished with 19 points, and both were hit really hard underneath the basket, and both were thrown to the floor hard in the first half.

In fact, in the first quarter foul caused by a collision between Justin Beach and Mario Hernandez less than four minutes into the game, Chaminade coach Jeff Young went ballistic, running onto the floor, arguing with the refs that a T should have been called. They called one all right---on Young.

The height advantage helped Chaminade outrebound the Aztecs 12-0 in the first quarter. At the end of the first quater, Barstow probably wanted to get back on the bus and head back to the desert. At the end of one, Chaminade led 25-7 lead. And it was only going to get worse. 6-7 freshman center Scott Borchart kept hitting inside for strong moves to the hole, and he finished with 14 points. Scott Long, the hero in the finals hit outside. Beach scored all of his 19 points in the first half, including 13 points in the second quarter. Junior point guard Cayce Cook also showed his toughness and quick passing ability, dealing 12 assists and getting six steals. Long, who was three of three from the three-point range, scored all of his points in the first three quarters.

At the end of the third quarter, this was just a disaster for Barstow, and Chaminade led by 46 points after extending the lead on a 15-0 scoring run; the score at the end of three was 84-38 lead. With that kind of a lead established, Coach Young allowed most of the bench players to play throughout the fourth. Chris Canoles scored 12 points for Chaminade. Barstow was led by Alvin Yarber, who scored all of his 14 points in the second period. Phil Alcantara added 11.

San Diego University 77, Yosemite 62
