Division II First Round Games--(March 11, 1998)
Southern
California vs. Northern California Champion
Friday 3/20/98
ARCO Arena, 8:00 p.m.
As a reminder, we'll keep the plug for the State Finals at the top of each of the reports for the respective regions. Dominguez won and so did Compton, setting up the "All-Compton" semifinal on Thursday. We don't know the location yet, but when we do find out we'll put it up. In the other bracket, Santa Margarita beat Central Section runner up Edison, and will now face Redondo Union, which beat Tulare, in the other semifinal. Here's what happened last night.
Division II
Dominguez 86, Point Loma 50
Tayshaun Prince did not play. Instead he sat on the bench Tuesday night watching Dominguez beat San Diego Point Loma, 74-41, in the first round of the CIF Southern California Division II regional playoffs. The word is that Prince, who will attend Kentucky, might just sit the rest of the playoffs, and miss the opportunity to win another State Championship. The Dons got along fine without Prince on Tuesday night, but their next opponent, Compton, will not be as easily defeated as Point Loma. The Dons will play Thursday night in the regional semifinals at 7:30 p.m. against visiting city rival Compton, a 86-50 victor over Oceanside in the first round. Dominguez beat Compton, 72-47, in a non-league game on Jan. 31, but without Prince, the game will be a lot closer.
Point Loma, which lost to Oceanside in the San Diego Section final, was unable to handle the Dons pressure defense, and they turned it over 16 times in the first half, and 27 times in the game overall. By the half, halftime, Dominguez, which is now 25-4, were leading 30-15, and ten of the Dominguez players had scored. Mike Carson, a senior guard who is now being heavily recruited, came off the bench to prove that he is the best perimeter shooter, hitting five of seven three pointers, and finishing with a team-high 17 points. Carson wasn't the only threat though for Dominguez. In all, 12 players scored, including Keith Kincade who had 10 points and seven rebounds, and Walter "Biggie" Small who finished with 10 points and six rebounds. 7'-0" freshman center Tyson Chandler had nine points, 12 rebounds and four blocked shots, while his buddy from the SoCal All-Stars, point guard Keilon Fortune, finished with four points, eight assists and four steals.
Point Loma, which finishes the year at 18-10, made only 15 of 50 shots from the field. Doug Croffett scored 10 points, and he was the only Pointer in double figures; others scoring were Valenzuela with 2, Jones 2, Barnes 5, Jackson 3, Bailey 7, Lang 5, and Lindfelt 4.
The complete scoring for Dominguez was Willie Hurst with 5, Brooks 6, Fortune 4, Bluitt 2, Johnson 5, Walton 2, Carson 17, Boulton 2, Kincade 10, Chamdler 9, Small 10, and James 2.
Santa Margarita 77, Fresno Edison 58
The Eagles withstood a 38-point outburst by Tiger guard Willie Johnson by not letting any other Edison player reach double figures. Meanwhile Santa Margarita depended on its balanced scoring--four players in double figures led by center Dekker McKeever's 20 points and 14 rebounds. Tuesday Santa Margarita defeated Fresno Edison, 77-58, at Santa Margarita before about 1,500 fans. The Eagles are now 29-2. Edison, the Central Section runner-up, finishes 25-6.
Santa Margarita had it's long range game working, hitting effectively from three-point range,7 for 12, breaking the full-court press and getting easy looks at the hoop. Even though it was not the prettiest game, with SM suffering through 12 turnovers forced by the press, they still managed to win by 19.
The Eagles led at the half, 38-25, and had a 55-45 lead after three quarters. But even with that kind of lead, the effort was really not there, so at the start of the fourth, Coach Jerry DeBusk gave the team an earful in front of the fans. "What I said you can't print," DeBusk told the LA Times after the game. "I was very agitated. They still had visions of the Bren Center win from last week, and they were lazy in practice on Monday and were somewhat flat." Even though SM led, DeBusk thought SM was letting Fresno dicate the tempo of the game. "I told them if they want to get to Pauley Pavilion on Saturday they had to make a stand now."
Apparently SM got scared, and just in time. The Eagles went on a 13-2 run to open the fourth quartter. Dekker McKeever got inside to score twice, on two huge slams, and then a three pointer by T.J. Williams SM's point guard. And the Tigers never recovered.
The only player for Edison to score in double figures was Tiger guard Willie Johnson who scored 19 points in each half, grabbed 11 rebounds and blocked two shots, but he could not do it all himself. Others scoring for Edison were Giklliam 5, Major 7, Walton 1, mcKinney 2, Harris 3, and Beltran with 2.
For Santa Margarita, Williams had 15, Rohe 11, McKeever 20, Rice 4, Ryan Forehan-Kelly had 16, Carson Palmer had 8, Gloger had 5, and Kramer 1.
Compton 86, Oceanside 50
Compton, duplicating the score of their cross-town rival Dominguez whom they will face on Thursday, and which also won 86-50, pulled off an easy first round win against Oceanside in the Division II CIF State Championship at Oceanside High last night. Oceanside finishes it's season with a mark of 21-9.
Senior guard Tito Maddox scored 23 points and point guard DeAndre Moore hit for another 13 as the Tarbabes jumped out to a 11-0 lead to start the game and never looked back. The team seems to have settled back down after the events of last week, including the shooting death in a drive-by of David Hamilton's friend in a car being driven by Hamilton. David himself was wounded, but seems to have recovered, but he didn't dominate this game like he did the finals.
Last night the Auburn-bound David Hamilton had only 11 points and 15 rebounds for Compton, which continues it's season at 27-6. Lanere Anderson also scored 10 points for Compton, including hitting 2-three pointers in the third quarter to put the game out of reach.
Compton led 15-11 at the end of the first quarter, and then just exploded during the second, outscoring Oceanside 23-12 to take a 38-23 lead at the half. In the third quarter it only got worse for Oceanside, as Compton again devastated the opposition, outscoring Oceanside 22-9. And finally in the fourth, it never really got any better as Compton closed out the period on a 26-18 scoring run to win by the final score of 86-50.
The complete scoring for Compton was Maddox with 23, Moore with 13, Hamilton 11, Anderson 10, Ross 9, Myles 8, Hosendove 8, Thompson 3, and Ringer 2.
For Oceanside, Matt Adame scored 13 points to lead the Tigers, who could never get closer than eight points after the first quarter. Others scoring were Maiden with 10, Barry 10, Alston 4, Peters 6, Watson 3, Freeman 2, and Watkins 2.
Redondo Union 74, Tulare 60
Andrew Zahn scored 25 points to lead the Sea Hawks (29-3) to a first round win. Tyler Hoffman contributed 18 points for the SeaHawks. Marcus Moore scored 13, while Levi Stauffer hit for 10 points. Others scoring for Redondo were Morris, Kittel and Hunt each with 2 points. Hoffman's 18 points also included half coming on three-point goals.
For Tulare, Myron Epps scored 22, while Rice had 12, Blacksheer had 14 Simones 8, costa and Datsun 2 each. Simones had 2 three-pointers as did Rice.
Redondo trailed by two at the end of the first half, 12-10, but then they came storming back, outscoring Tulare 22-14 in the second quarter to take a 32-26 lead into the locker room at the half. In the third quarter the two teams played almost even, with Redondo adding another point to it's lead, by outscoring Tulare 19-18, to lead 51-44 at the end of three. Finally in the fourth, Redondo pulled away, adding another 7 points to the lead at the end by outscoring Tulare 23-16 in the fourth.
Redondo will travel to Santa Margarita on Thursday at Santa Margarita in one of two Division II Semifinals scheduled.
