Santa Barbara Dons Beat
Cabrillo In SB Tourney--(Dec. 1, 1999)
If you're reading this as we are posting, then you're going to be late for the Santa Barbara v. Mater Dei game tonight at Glendora High which is part of the 1999 Glendora Triple Crown event. But better late than never, so if you can't be there tonight, here's a late one from Monday, from the Lompoc Record, which was evidently published in their print version on Tuesday, but which didn't hit the web until today:

11/30/99 The Cabrillo Conquistadores opened the basketball season, giving evidence they won't be the Los Padres League doormat again by giving the visiting Santa Barbara Dons all they could handle Monday night before falling 48-45. The Conqs' stifling defense held Santa Barbara to four points in the first quarter, 14 at the half. "We had our chances at the end," said coach Mark Tasch. "We couldn't get shots to drop." The Conqs led 20-14 at halftime and entered the fourth quarter tied at 31-all. Free throw shooting played a major role as the Dons sank 13-of-16 while Cabrillo was only 9-of-19. Shawn Whilt and Chris Koester of Santa Barbara both sank a pair of free throws in the closing minutes. Calvin Peterson led Cabrillo scoring with 15 while Marcus Jenkins had 14. Both sank two three-pointers. "Giving them only 14 points in the first half is good," said Tasch. "It wasn't a sloppy game. It was a good defensive game on both ends of the court.
"Santa Barbara is figuring on having a big year so it's a good sign," said Tasch. "I hope we can build on it. Santa Barbara played without last year's top returning scorer Brent Williams, who was ill. The Dons' highly-touted transfer, Dommanic Ingerson, did not play either, as final word on his eligibility had not been received. The contest was the opener of the Santa Barbara Tournament, four games of pool play between various county teams. The Conqs travel to face Righetti tonight in the second game of the tourney.
