Royal Assistant Dave Marshall
Succumbs To Cancer--(Dec. 29, 1999)
The LA Times reported this morning that Royal High School's boys assistant coach Dave Marshall Jr., died Monday after a three-year battle with lymphoma. Marshall coached at Royal for the last seven years. Marshall, only 33, coached alongside Larry Wiksell for the first two weeks of this season, but his health deteriorated quickly after a tumor in his chest grew rapidly and affected the ability of several major organs--including his lungs--to function properly.
Wiksell, 35, told the Times that he and Marshall were "co-coaches" at Royal for seven seasons, although they had different titles. "During this whole thing, I've thought just how lucky I was to know him," Wiksell told the Times. "I've never dwelt on how much I'm going to miss him. Instead, I've focused on all the good times we've had together . . . and what a privilege it was to know him."
A memorial service will be held for Marshall at Church of the Living Christ in Simi Valley at 2 p.m. on Thursday.
