Reebok Holiday Prep Classic:
NoHo Beats Rancho Bernardo--(Dec. 20, 1999)
North Hollywood won this contest 77-58, and Game No. 45 of the Reebok Holiday Prep Classic, a Bronze Cup game between North Hollywood (7-1) and Rancho Bernado of San Diego (4-2) was not really much of a contest, as North Hollywood just plain outshot Rancho Bernardo. We're also getting the feeling that Coach Rob Bloom of North Hollywood is correct when he says that in each game the Huskies play, somebody different manages to step up and have a big game. The last few games prior to this one, it was Kenny Hauser (6'-6" Jr. SF/SG), and today it was Dominic Johnson, who had a game high 16 points on 6 for 7 shooting from the field, and Johnson was named MVP of the game.
North Hollywood jumped out to a substantial lead in the first half and ledd 46-22 at the half. While Rancho Bernardo played just about even, in fact outscoring the Huskies in the second half 35-31, it was not nearly enough and North Hollywood cruised. Turnovers were about even in the game, but it was the fine shooting and scoring of North Hollywood that just killed Rancho Bernardo, which only shot 31% from the field, 22 % from three and only 55 % from the line. In fact, Rancho Bernardo only shot 31% overall in the game, just horrible shooting. A few guys did ok for RB, including Travis Newman who had 19 points and Marke Baeshore with 12. Paul Victor also had 10 reboujnds to lead both teams in that column.
NoHo's Gus Ruiz, a compact shooter, and a really tough defender, had 14 points on 5 for 8 field goal shooting, 1 for 1 from three point range and 3 for 4 from the line. Hauser had 11 points himself, shooting 4 for 4 from the field and 3 for 5 from the line while grabbing 5 rebounds and 2 steals. Nathan Stern (6'-4" Jr. SG), a smooth shooter, hit for 7 points on 2 for 3 shooting from the field (1 for 2 from three) and David Danipour had 10 points as well on 4 for 7 from the field and 2 for 3 from three.
North Hollywood's win puts them in one of two semifinals in the Bronze cup tomorrow. They'll play at 11:45 at Green Valley Main against Galena. Rancho Bernardo drops into the consolation game against Mojave at 11:25 a.m. at Durango Main (Green Valley is the host this year, so all the Championship games will move there on Tuesday).
See you there.
