Reebok Holiday Prep Classic:
Mounties
Win, Sylmar Loses--(Dec. 20, 1999)
Two games of interest to SoCal fans from the Reebok Holiday Prep Classic, two of the first of the day. In the Silver Cup Tournament Sylmar (2-6) lost again, this time to South Laurel, and in the Bronze Cup Tournament Montclair Prep beat the team from Bellvue (Aurora, Colorado) 72-59.
Josaiah Johnson will be getting a lot of D-I schools to start knocking on his door after this tournament performance. Montclair Prep's Johnson (6'-8" Sr. SG/SF), the son of former UCLA and NBA great Marques Johnson and brother of former UCLA player Kris Johnson, was named the game's MVP and he again had a huge scoring game with 26 points, shooting 11-23 from the field, 1 for 3 from three, and 3-4 from the line. Josaiah was also a monster on the boards, grabbing 14 rebounds (5 offensive, 9 defensive) as Montclair Prep came from behind to win, and he also led the team in steals with 3. The Mounties trailed at the half 27-29, but then managed to outscore Bellvue 45-30 in the second half.
Others who played well for Montclair included Andre Freeman (5'-10" Sr. PG), who had 5 assists and 11 points. Will Sheslow (6'-1" So. SG) had 13 points on 3-6 shooting from three point range, and he also was 4-7 from the line. had had 2 assists, but didn't have a very good day hanging onto the ball, and was credited with 4 turnovers. Jesse Bronner (6'-6" Sr. F) finished with 13 points as well, shooting 6-9 from the field and 1-1 from the line. Not many others played for Montclair, but co-coaches Howard Abrams and Greg Patterson did managed to get everyone off the bench and into the game. Others scoring were Brian Trump with 3 free throws (3-4), and Derek Daniels (6'-8"So. PF) who played about 5 mintues. With about 3:57 to go in the game and Montclair holding a commanding lead, Abrams and Patterson cleared the bench and put Jason Goss, David Morse, Garen Hartyniah, and Charlie Kranzdorf into the game.
Montclair will next face the winner of today's 11:35 a.m. Eldorado (Las Vegas NV) v. Canyon Anaheim game. The game will be tomorrow morning at 10:30 a.m. at Green Valley Auxiliary Gym (Game No. 68 for those who have the numbered schedules).
Sylmar wasn't so lucky in the Silver Cup Consolation bracket, and they got hammered again, this time by South Laurel. Sylmar was led by Branden Robinson, who finished with 16 points on 5-12 shooting from the field and 6-10 from the free throw line. Sylmar was never really in this game, and they trailed by a score of 38-24 had the half, and then lost the second half as well, getting outscored 42-31. Jason Adams finished with 12 for the Spartans, hitting 6 of 13 from the field, and finishing with 4 rebounds. According to the official Dynasport stats, Sylmar only had 1 turnover in the game, which is remarkable, but then they didn't have all that many possessions that they converted on. The team overall made only 23 of 63 shots from the field, and was 9 for 15 from the line. They didn't make a three pointer in the game and went 0 for 7 from the arc. Sylmar's other scorers were Fernando Barreda with 6, Chris Stewart 2, George O'Garro with 9, Sal Ochaoa with 6, and Jeff Morese with 4. Earnest Williams only played sparingly, about 2:26 in the game and didn't score; Branden Lasley and Darrell Penn didn't play.
Sylmar will next play in Game 74 at 1:00pm at the Durango Auxiliary Gym, against the Loser of Game 40, which is going to be the loser of the Hitchcock v. Rancho game.
