Reebok Holiday Prep Classic:
Harvard-Westlake Squeaks By Cajon--(Dec. 20, 1999)
Game No. 43 of the Reebok Holiday Prep Classic, a Silver Cup game between Harvard-Westlake (5-2) and Cajon (7-1) again turned into a squeaker for the Wolverines, but they managed to escape with a three point win, 56-53, as Russell Lakey (6'-0" Sr. PG) was selected as the game's MVP for his 19 point performance, which again involved some interesting shooting; Russell was 6 of 16 from the field and 3 for 7 from three point range, but again was perfect from the line (4 for 4). He was credited with 5 rebounds (2 offensive and 3 defensive) and one steal. Craig Weinstein had 4 points on 2 for 8 shooting and he went 0 for 4 from thee point range, he had 3 boards, 2 steals and committed 2 turnovers. John Karravas had 11 points (4 for 11 from the field, 3 for 10 from three point range), and Eric Geffner, who shot 7 for 10 from the field but missed both free throw attempts, finished with 14 points. Bryan Coffey had 6 points off the bench and Chris Hooks, who started, only had 2 on 1 for 5 shooting (0-1 form three).
For Cajon, Paul Roby had 24 points, and Blake Walker had 16, while Donovon Morris had 9. Others scoring were Brian Breeden with 2, and Allen Harris with 2. Cajon led the game at the half, 29-23, but then Lakey went to work and the Wolverines outscored Cajon 33-24 in the second half.
The big difference in this game, as it usually is in most well-coached Harvard-Westlake games was the defensive pressure the Wolverines showed, getting an impressive 22 points off of 18 turnovers which they forced from Cajon in the game; in comparison, Cajon only had 6 points off of turnovers, and Harvard-Westlake committed a very low number of t-o's, just 9 in the game. An impressive showing and Harvard-Westlake will play tomorrow in Game 79 at 2:35pm against Dimond (which beat Upper St. Clair, 68-51 in another game today). Cajon moves on to play Upper St. Clair at 2:15 p.m. in the Durango Main gym.
If Harvard-Westlake wins, it will move them into the Silver Championship game, which will be Game 106 at 3:10pm on Wednesday at Green Valley Main; if they lose, they'll still be playing for 3rd or 4th place in the Silver Cup. Cajon, on the other hand can only advance again if they win tomorrow; if they do, they'll be playing for 5th-6th place; if they lose, they'll finish up early and get to take off for home on Tuesday night.
We'll try to get out to see Lakey and the rest of the Wolverines tomorrow. See you there.
