Reebok Holiday Prep Classic:
Campbell Hall Beats Chatsworth--(Dec. 20, 1999)
Game No. 42 of the Reebok Holiday Prep Classic, a Bronze Cup game between Campbell Hall (8-3) and Chatsworth (3-5), in which Campbell Hal won 64-52. Hassan Bassiri (6'-0" Sr. PG/SG) scored 26 points in the game and was named the MVP. Bassiri shot an impressive 11 for 15 from the field, and a perfect 3 for 3 from three point range as well as grabbing 4 rebounds, 2 assists and 1 steal, and he had no turnovers and only committed two fouls, nearly flawless basketball. Hassan is a quick, speedy guard, who also has great toughness and proved today that he can shoot in a game with pressure, playing 27:31 of the game and doing everything he needed to do (well, except he was only 1-3 from the line. . . practice those free throws--:^) ).
After trailing 28-31 at the half, Campbell Hall went on a 15 point scoring blitz, outscoring Chatsworth 36-21 in the half in the process. And Campbell Hall played tremendous defense too, forcing the Chancellors into 19 turnovers while committing just 10 themselves, and managing to capitalize by getting 21 of their points off turnovers in transition.
Another difference in the game came down not only to the huge second half run by Campbell Hall, but also the bitterly cold shooting by Chatsworth, which only hit 27% of their field goals in the second period. By contrast, Campbell Hall as a team was amazing in the second half: 70% from the field (14 of 20), perfect from three (1 for 1), and they were 58% from the free throw line. Jesse Foster also had 21 points for CH, shooting 8 for 10 from the field, 2 for 2 from three point range and 3 for 4 from the line while grabbing 5 rebounds. Two very impressive performances from two seniors who will be making an impact in Division V-AA this year.
Chatsworth, on the other hand is a team that now finds itself in offensive trouble, with one player, Shane Berry trying to do everything, and his stats are demonstrative evidence that he needs to get others involved or this team isn't going anywhere, and surely not the City Championship Playoffs, like the did last year. We don't mean to rag on Berry, but the numbers just don't lie: He may have finished with another team-high scoring performance (23 points), but he only shot 8 for 19 from the field, 3 for 9 from three point range and had a negative assist to turnover ratio of 1.75 turnovers for every assist: He turned the ball over 7 times and only had 4 assists, dangerous numbers for a point guard. Chatsworth's big men also weren't particularly effective, a sign that some things just need to be tuned and adjusted, like more ball movement and better offensive choices: Ronald Ruffin finished with 12 points on 6 for 14 shooting, 0 for 3 from three point range, and Adam Drell shot only 3 for 7 from the field, but was perfect from three point range (what? a three for the big guy?), and he hit all of his free throws (4 for 4). Drell had 7 rebounds, and Berry led the team with 9 boards. But shooting wise, this was not a splendid performance as a team.
Chatsworth will next play Silverado in Game No. 70, at 11:35 a.m. at Durango, as these two teams duke it. Either way, both teams will be finished tomorrow with the tournament in the consolation side of the Bronze Cup Tournament.
Campbell Hall will play in Game 72 tomorrow at 11:55am at Green Valley's Auxiliary Gym against Mars, PA, and both of these teams will be fighting for a chance to play on Wednesday in the 7th-8th Place game in the Bronze Cup bracket (that game is at 9:05 a.m. on Wednesday, at Green Valley Auxiliary Gym). The loser of tomorrow's game will be done and gets to head home for the holidays early.
We'll have the results from tomorrow's Campbell Hall v. Mars game and some photos as well, and maybe even some shots from the Chatsworth game too.
See you there.
