Reebok Holiday Prep Classic Recaps:
SoCal Teams--Day Three--(Dec. 23, 1999)

These are the results from two days ago (yeah, we ran a little behind due to travel from Vegas, and didn't get to update these yesterday, but better late than never. . . ) These results are only for the games featuring teams from SoCal.  We'll post the rest up later, but for now, here's how the homies did on day three.  The final day's action will also be posted up later this morning, so come back and check that out later.

Game No. 65:  (Bronze Cup, 5th Place Semifinal) Venice 82, Chapparal 63

This was a Bronze Cup game fifth place semifinal game, and Venice came out doing what they do best: running and shooting the ball, and they had some guys really step up for them yesterday, including Kevin Eleby (5'-10" Jr. PG/SG) who scored 18 points all from the field (9-15 shooting), to go along with two steals.  Anthony Alexander was selected as the game MVP and he finished with 15 points, (5 for 12 from the field, 3-4 from the line) and he also had 9 rebounds.  Others scoring for Venice were Moontell Duhon who had 10 points, Lyman Edwards was 4 for 6 and finished with 8 points and 5 assists, while Kyle Morrison had 13 points.

Game No. 68:  (Bronze Cup Consolation) Canyon (Anaheim) 75, Montclair Prep 66

Canyon, which got off to a very rocky start in its first game in the tournament managed to finish strong, while Montclair Prep, which has one of the stars of this tournament, Josiah Johnson (6'-8" Sr. SG/SF), won one and lost two to close out the tournament, and drop to 6-3 on the year.  Canyon improves to 4-4 with the win.  Canyon was led by Jamal Taylor, the game MVP who scored 29 points on 9-15 shooting from the field (8-12 from three, which might just be a tournament record), and he was also perfect from the free throw line at 3 for 3.  Taylor also had 3 steals in the game and only turned the ball over twice.  And teammate Travis Klien had 22 points on 6 for 20 shooting from the field (6 for 19 from three. . . 19? Wow that's a lot of shots) and he was 4-6 from the line.  Nick Waltz of Canyon also had 18 points (5-18 from the field, 3-9 from three, 5-8 from the line).  Others scoring were Jason Taylor with 4, and James Lattos with 2.  For Montclair Prep, Josiah Johnson had 22 points (7 for 17 from the field, 3 for 5 from three, 5 for 10 from the line).  But one thing Montclair Prep got was a ton of rebounds:  Johnson had 12 (10 defensive), and Jesse Bronner had 16 (12 defensive);  Derek Daniels and Brian Trump, to sophs, both had 7 rebounds; Trump also had 4 points and Daniels had 8. Others scoring were Eric Kaufman with 2, and Will Sheslow with 7 (3 for 12 from the field, 1 for 5 from three).

Game No. 69:  (Bronze Cup Consolation)  Rancho Bernardo 61, Mojave 56

Jeff Speights again showed why he was one of the better players in this tournament, as his MVP performance included scoring 28 points on 10 for 15 from the field, and making 8 of 11 free throws, and he also grabbed 5 rebounds, and a steal, to lead Rancho Bernardo (5-2) to the win over Las Vegas Mojave (2-7).  The box is below:

Game No. 70:  (Bronze Cup Consolation)  Silverado 69, Chatsworth 64

This game was again a painful experience for the guys from Chatsworth who need to really start to come together to play team basketball. Shane Berry had 19 points, again a team high, and this time he also had some decent stats for a point guard:  4 assists and only 1 turnover.  Ronald Ruffin had 17 points (7 -15 from the field, 3-9 from three and 0-2 from the line.  But the rest of the team struggled and just couldn't score effectively against the Silverado defense.  Kevin Short led all scorers in the game for Silverado and he finished with 20 points.  Here's the box:

Game No. 71:  (Bronze Cup Championship Semifinal) Galena 58, North Hollywood 35

This was a game in which North Hollywood got off to a slow start, trialing early and often and it took them about 4 minutes into the game before scoring at all, and by that time the score was 8-2, and the Huskies never really recovered.  Galena outshot them, and their big men just outplayed them too.  Joe Heaton put on a shooting clinic for Galena, finishing with 26 points, shooting 11 for 16 from the field 3 for 5 from three and hitting his only free throw.  He also managed 4 rebounds and 2 steals in the game, and led all scorers (he was also the only player for Galena in double figures), and he only played 17 minutes in the game, i.e., about half the contest.  In contrast, North Hollywood had only one player in double figures (Ken Hauser with 10), and they trailed 35-14 at the half.  As a result, North Hollywood got to play in the third place game, but still has an impressive 7-2 record to start the season.  Galena is 10-2 overall.

Game No.71:   (Bronze Cup Consolation) Campbell Hall 57, Mars 55

Campbell Hall managed to pull out the overtime win against the men from Mars (just had to say that :^)), and ghey once again got big pperformances from their starters:   Jesse Foster, who was the Game MVP, finished with 12 points, while Hassan Bassiri had 14, and freshman point guard Robert Locke had 12 and 5 assists.  Aaron Kerr had 7, Greg Drobnick had 9, Klippsten had 2, and Derrick Williams was credited with one point, although frankly we didn't see him there and thought that he'd been ruled inelgible due to grades.  Oh, well.  Campbell Hall shot the ball pretty well, at least from the field, hitting 13 of 26 in the first half and 13 of 28 in the second, and as a team, they did very well and are coming together very nicely. Those early season tough losses seem to be paying off with some excellent wins, and they will definitely be a factor in the Divison V-AA this year.

Game No. 74:  (Silver Cup Consolation)  Hitchcock 77, Sylmar 86 (OT)

Sylmar finally broke out of it's early season slump, and picked up the overtime win. We spoke to Sylmar Coach Bort Escoto after the game and he told us, not by way of excuse, but simply to point out the reality of what's happened to the team, that he has not had a healthy starting five at the tournament yet.  Nevertheless, the Spartans did manage to get some good performances from Branden Robinson with 20 points, who made 7 of 13 field goals, and had 11 rebounds and 4 assists in the game, as he was selected MVP.    Earnest Williams also finally broke out of his scoring stupor and hit for 21 points in the game, (7-14, 0-1, and 7-13 from the line)  Jeff Morse had 16 points, but beyond that,  Sylmar didn't have anyone else in double figures.   as a whole, thye team shot 45% int he first half, 53 % in the second half, and 49% overall from the field. (36% from three point range).

Game No. 75:  (Silver Cup Championship Semifinals) Bakersfield 58, St. Mary's   (AZ)77

Bakersfield finally fell in the tournament, and sooner or later it was bound to happend that Alfred Williams would have an off-day.  His 11 points and 4 rebounds on 4-13 shooting from the field was not up to his usual standards, and St. Mary's size with Channing Frye (6'-10" Jr. C), and the Fontenet brothers, Jason (5'-10" Jr. PG) and James (6'-0" Jr. PG/SG), were just too much for the drillers.  The Fontenets are amazingly quick, perhaps the two quickest guards at the tournament, and Jason really did a number on Bakersfield, hitting for 20 points, 10 points off free throws (10-14), and Channing Frye, the game MVP colleged 21 points and an impressive 15 rebounds, shooting 9 for 16 from the field, and 3 for 4 from the line.   Jamese Fontenet had 13 oints and 3 steals.  And it wasn't like Bakersfield shot horribly either, it's just that St. Mary's is really, really good. Bakersfield shot 51% from the field in the first half and 41% overall, not bad in comparison to some of the team percentages we've been seeing here.  Devensively thogh they got hurt on the boards, outrebounded 47-38, and Johnny Wiley accounted for 12 of Bakersfield's total, with no other Bakersfield player even coming close.  Bakersfield drops to 9-2 on the season, and 2-1 in the tournament.  St. Mary's is 10-4 and advanced to the finals.

Game No. 78:  (Silver Cup Consolation)  Serra 47, Cimarron-Memorial 51

Serra just kept getting close, but they couldn't close the gap at the end of the game, after leading 31-30 at the half against a team that probably would have been blown away had Aerick Sanders (suspended for the tournament) been allowed to play.  As it was, Doyle Cole's 14 points on 4 for 12 shooting from the field, 3 for 5 from three and 3 for 4 from the line, were good, but not good enough. Serra did just about everything right in this game, except score more points.   They led in shooting percentage in the first half 61% to 40% form the field, 60% to 0 % from three, and they led overall in steals (8), blocked shots (2), assists (12), and rebounds (18). . . the only thing they couldn't do was put the ball in the basket with regularity in the second  halfr and their percentage from the field fell t 21% in the second half and just 12% from three i the half.   We can't wait to see Aerick come back, because this team just isn't the same without him.

Game No. 79:  (Silver Cup Championship Semifinal)   Harvard Westlake 74, Dimond 75

So close and yet so far. . . . The Wolverines were 6 points up with about 1 minute and 30 seconds remaining, and squandered the lead and ultimately the game.  In that final minute and a half, Dimond trailed by 6, 74-68, and seemingly only had to hold the ball.  But Harvard Westlake committed three fouls and two turnovers in that time, the final foul committed on a desperation shot by Dimond with just 3 seconds remaining with the score tied, sending Dimond to the line, where they made 1 of 2, ultimately the 1 point differential in this game. Other than the few gaffes at the end, Harvard-Westlake played a good game, and Russell Lakey was pretty much unstoppable when driving into the paint and pulling up:  He had 32 points on 12 for 22 shooting from the field, 3 for 8 from three, and went 5 for 6 from the line, while committing only two turnovers in the game. Eric Geffner, also had a tremendous game, grabbing 19 rebounds--10 offensive and 9 defensive- (a 1999 tournament record), and 17 points on 7 for 10 shooting from the field, 1-1 from three and 2-4 from the line.  John Karravas scored 16 points (5-10 from the  field, 3-5 from three, and 3-5 frm the line), and he brings a whole new dimension to the Wolverine's defense.  Craig Weinstein, the soph, didn't have a very good game: 0-5 from the field, 0-4 from three, and 2-4 from the line, with three rebounds and 1 steal, and he finished with two points. And aside from the H-W mini-collapse at the end, they played a great game, but Dimond was just that much better overall.  Dimond remained at 5-0 overall (3-0 in the tournament), and H-W dropped to 6-2 overall, 2-1 in the tournament.  Dimond advanced to the finals (which they lost), while H-W moved on the the third place game (which they won).

Game No. 85:  (Gold Cup Consolation)  Long Beach Jordan 67, Chugiak 50

Long Beach Jordan was led by (who else?) Travon Bryant (6'-8" Sr. PF), who was named the game's MVP, scoring 20 points and grabbing 7 rebounds, 3 assists and shooting 9 for 13 from the field, and 2-6 from the line (work on those free throws, Tray).  He was joined in double figures by Rashawn Childs with 18 poinkts (7-11 from the field, 4-7 from three) and Ron Banks with 18 (8-12 from the field, 0-1 from three, and 2-4 from the line).  Jordan however played a pretty sloppy game overall, committing 14 turnovers and allowing 12 of those off Chugiak steals, 5 of them grabbed by Jason Ericson (6'-3" Sr. G), one of the quicker defenders in the tournament, who also finished the game with a high of 25 ponits on 11 of 20 shooting from the field (3 for 7 from three), and had Chugiak pulled this off, he no doubt would have been the game MVP.  As it was, he made 11 of his team's 21 shots from the field and 3 of the teams 5 three pointers.  Jordan advanced to the 5th place game (which they won), and Chugiak got an early exit.  Here's the box score:

Jordan (Long Beach, CA) 67 Chugiak (Eagle River, AK) 50

Chugiak (1-2) 22 28 - 50

Game No. 87:  (Gold Cup Championship Semifinal)   Simi Valley 74, Western 57

Simi Valley was again led by Branduinn Fullove (6'-5" Sr. SG/SF) who put on a clinic, hitting for a game high 28 points, on 10 for 16 shooting from the field, and 2-5 from three, 6-8 from the line, but he wasn't selected as the game MVP because how many times can he get it. . .  so the tournament folks spread the wealth around and Anish Sharda (6'-2" Sr. SG/PG), who trades off at the one with Shaun Michel (6'-2" Sr. PG/SG), was named MVP in this one, finishing with 11 points on 3-4 shooting from the field, 2-3 from three point range, and 3-6 from the line.   Brett Michel had just as good a game as did Sharda, but what the heck, he'd already been chosen as game MVP in the one prior. . . Brett finished with 11 points on 4 for 12 shooting from the line, 2-8 from three (well, that's not as good as Sharda), and 1 for 1 from the line.  Dustin Villepigue continued to struggle scoring-wise, but he had 8 rebgounds in the game (6 defensive) and shot perfectly on those he took (2-2 from the field).  Simi and Westen were close, in fact tied at the half 34-34, but then the Pioneers (8-0), just exploded in the second half, hitting 60% of their shots from the field in the final half (14-23), and they executed very well, with Shaun Michel finding Fullove repeatedly on backdoor cuts wide open and all alone under the basket.  Simi advanced on to the final (which they won), while Western advanced to the third place game (which they lost).  Here's the box:

Simi Valley (CA) 74 Western (Las Vegas) 57
