Reebok Holiday Prep Classic:
Harvard-Westlake
Beats Reno McQueen, 65-64 (OT)--(Dec. 18, 1999)
Bronze Cup Game: Game No. 20 Harvard-Westlake v. McQueen (Reno, NV), Durango Auxiliary Gym
When Harvard-Westlake coach Greg Hilliard gets an idea in his head about who his players are, it's hard for anyone else to crack the lineup. . . at least that was seemingly true in this game, at least if the box-score is accurate. Six players got the bulk of the minutes, an overtime contest in which four of the HW starters played virtually the entire game, including most of the overtime. Russell Lakey who finished with 16 points, played 30 minutes, while Eric Geffner also played 32 minutes and finished with 13 points. Craig Weinstein (13 points) played 28 minutes and Chris Hooks played 20:35 and finished with 9, the only starter for Harvard-Westlake who didn't hit in double figures.
John Karravas (5'-10" Sr. G) was named the game's MVP and he finished with 14 points, and hit some key baskets in the stretch. Karravas shot 6-16 (not bad, but not great), and only 1-9 from three point range (ouch), but he did get three steals, three of Harvard's total of 18 in the game. There were some other big stats for other Wolverines: Eric Geffner finished with a team high 15 rebounds, and shot 6-8 from the field, 1-1 frm the line but missed his only three point attempt. Geffner also managed theree steals and only committed two turnovers, pretty clean basketball. Russell Lakey, while scoring his 16 points, managed to fire up 23 shots from the field but only connected on 5, and went 2-11 from three point range. He was perfect from the line 94-4) and had 6 rebounds, 3 steals and committed only 2 turnovers. Weinstein shot 4-13 from the firle, 1-3 from three pont range, grabbed 4 steals and had 4 turnovers. Assists were not plentiful for H-W, and while we have trouble believing this statistic, there it is in black and white: 1 assist the whole game. Maybe that's why Karravas got the MVP award: He had Harvard-Westlake's lone assist in the game. We knew these guys liked to shoot themselves, but one assist?. . . And other than the startersno one else scored in the game. . . not a good sign if Harvard-Westlake runs into a deep bench. Nevertheless, the Wolverines are 5-1 overall now on the season.
McQueen had one apparent star-quality player, Karl Aaker, who shot 11-29 from the field, 2-9 from three point range and 2-5 from th eline, but he grabbed 11 boards and 26 total points and he got 5 steals. John Sutherland also had a game high 17 rebounds for McQueen.
Here's the box with the rest of the scoring:

Interestingly, the box score which we got and the one which the Las Vegas Review-Journal has too, doesn't have halftime scores or stats. . . wonder what happened. We'll have to wait to find out until Monday (unless some of the local LA papers followed the team there. . . )
Harvard-Westlake plays again on Monday at 1:10 p.m. in the Green Valley Main Gym against Cajon (San Bernardino, CA) which beat Cimarron-Memorial (Las Vegas, NV) by a score of 62-51.
See you there.
