Reebok Holiday Prep Classic: Chatsworth
Loses To Mojave, 63-53--(Dec. 18, 1999)

Bronze Cup Game:  Game No. 18   Chatsworth v. Mojave (North Las Vegas, NV) Durango Auxiliary Gym

Chatsworth (3-4), on some terrible shooting and seemingly selfish play, lost their first round game by 10 to one of the hometown teams.   Even though Shane Berry finished with 24 points, he didn't exactly have great point guard numbers:  8-15 shooting (pretty good shooting actually), but he had 0 assists (yeooow) and 4 turnovers (ouch) while playing 28 mintues.  He did manage to go 8-10 from the line (very good) and picked up 4 rebounds and 3 steals (ok, so he had a good game), and overall, it was a decent game. . . for him.  But the rest of the team really suffered.  How's this for a painfully telling statistic:  Ronald Ruffin finished with 7 points, and he shot a horrible 3 for 21 from the field, and went 0 for 6 from three point range.  He made one free throw out of two but did grab 8 boards to go along with his 3 steals, and his 5 turnovers for the night.

Adam Drell (6'-7" Sr. PF) who had been averaging something like 28 ppg in the last four games, finished with only 6 points and fouled out after only 16:14 of playing time. Not to make excuses but he was playing with a broken nose, and a busted lip, the result of taking an elbow to the face in a non-league game last week, and a forearm to the lip at the Buchanan-Clovis West "Battle of the Central Valley."  But from the looks of things, other than Ruffin and Berry taking a lot of shots (and the two accounted for 36 of Chatsworth's 63 shots in the game),   the team made only 16 from the field. . . out of 63 attempts.  Man, that's freezing cold shooting.  So you can see why this one came up in the "L" column.  The team shot a horrible 25.4% from the field, and went 1-16 from three point range.  Whooee, bring a coat because it's cold in here.

Mojave didn't shoot all that much better, but it was just enough better to win.  Calvin Redden of Mojave (2-5) was selected as the game MVP, scoring a team high 18 points and grabbing 12 rebounds.  Elijah Smith also had 15 points and 11 boards for Mojave.  The rest of the scoring is below in the box:

Chatsworth will play Campbell Hall on Monday at 1:00 p.m. at the Durango Auxiliary in a loser's bracket game. Campbell Hall lost to Galena (boy, were we wrong in our prediction of that one). In any event, it's sort of ironic that two teams from the San Fernando Valley, one a City Section team (equivalent to D-IAA in enrollment size if they were Southern Section) and the other a Southern Section Division V-AA team (enrollment of about 300), had to travel all the way to Vegas just to play a game. . . . Should be a fun one.

See you there Monday.
