Reebok Holiday Prep Classic: Fresno
Central Loses
To East Jefferson, 64-59 (OT)--(Dec. 18, 1999)
Gold Cup Game: Game No. 2. Fresno Central v. East Jefferson, (Louisiana) at Green Valley, Main Gym
This was the first game of the day for the Gold Cup tournament, in which all the first round games were played at Green Valley High School's Main Gym, and it must have been a real barn-burner,because the game went to overtime, an dJefferson finally pulled it out in the extra period. For Central, the starters were Adam Wall, Steve Alarcon, Cory Wiggins, Adreas Bloch, and Ray Hightower. We can't really tell much about what happened in the game, from a details point of view, but we can give you the final stats and stuff for the game:
The score was 23-18 at the end of the first half (these games are all 16 minute halves, instead of 8 minute quarters as they are in California), Central leading. In the first half, Central's shooting was abysmal: 9 for 24 from the field (37.5%), and even worse from behind the three point line (2 for 9 or .222), and the only thing that saved them was shooting 75% from the line (3 for 4). And Jefferson wasn't much worse, just enough: They shot .304 from the field on 7-23 shooting, and went 0-5 from three point range, bu tdid manage 4-7 from the free throw line.
In the second half though Central continued to shoot about the same (.400 on 10-25 from the field, 4-11 from three, .364, and again hit 12-16 or 75% of their free throws. Jefferson was better, just enough to win. In the second half, they shot .586 from the field and .222 (2-9) again from the line.
The real difference was the extra period, in which Jefferson outscored Central 18-13. Unfortunately, the box score we have doesn't provide the scoring details for the overtime (it looks like it's included in the second half stats, so it can't be broken out). But the bottom line is that East Jefferson managed 5 more points in the overtime, enough to win.
The high scorers for Central were Adam Wall with 23 points (in 32 minutes). cory Wiggins had 12 points (30 minutes, 1 assist and 6 turnovers, yeow. . . ). ?Ray Hightower had 10 (23 mintues, only 1 turnover and 7 rebounds), And Adreas Bloch had 9 points. Others scoring for Central were Steve Alercon 3, Chris Robinson 0, John Eagan DNP, Sal Espinoza 0 (20 minutes), Erik Romero 0, Sukvic Brar 0, Phillip Bailey 2, Nick Giovannitti DNP, Kenny Brister 0, and John Clemmons 0.
Central will next play Mountain View on Monday at Green Valley Main at 4:10 p.m. Mountain View (from Mesa, Arizona) lost to Champagnat (Miami, FL) by a score of 64-50 in the second game today in the Gold Cup Tournament.
