Second Day
First Round Results--(Dec. 1, 1999)
We've already posted up the results for the first two days of this great tournament, and the matchups (at least the matchups which should be taking place if the brackets are the same as they were when faxed to us in mid-November by Jim Nielsen) for today's second round games, so if you're interested, check the index of the Daily Articles. In the meantime, here are the results from yesterday:
Redondo Union 77, Bell 27
Visiting Bell gave the Sea Hawks (1-0) something less than a real challenge in a 77-27 rout. But Andrew Zahn told the Daily Breeze reporter covering the game that he was grateful for the workout. I knew it was going to be like this. We just wanted to work hard, Zahn said. It was nice to go out and play another team, finally. UCLA coach Steve Lavin was also in the house checking out Zahn, and apparently the rumors are true, and UCLA has in fact asked Zahn to keep his options open until spring. Zahn lead all scorers with 16 points, seven rebounds and five blocks, shooting 10 of 11 from the field in just 11:35 of playing time. Bell turned the ball over 16 times in the face of Redondo's pressure defense, scoring only seven points in the second half. Ryan Mollins and Dijon Thompson each had 11 points, while Adam Zahn had eight points.
Mira Costa 60, North Torrance 36--I.V. Wiley and Dewayne Morris each scored 16 points to pace the Mustangs in the first round. Justin Agsalud led North with 10 points.
Carson 58, South Torrance 54--John Harvey led a balanced attack with 10 points as the Colts (1-0) overcame a 25-point performance from B.J. Hart for the first-round win over the Spartans (0-1).
Valencia 72, Jefferson 33--Valencia had nothing to worry about in this game, and it was a complete mismatch from the start. At the end of the first quarter, Jefferson had only scored two points, while Valencia had 23. Royce Minor (5'-10" Sr. PG) and Albert Ingram of Valencia both had 19 each. Others scoring for Valencia were Ahmed 2, Bunce 2, Dunwoody 2, Felix 2, Smith 5, Montana 4, Will Broadous 12, Lauf 2, and Velasquez 3. For Jefferson, the scorers were Brown 3, Jones 2, Pritchette 6, Kelly 5, Frazier 4, Terrell Rainer 13.
