OC Register Top 10 Boys & Girls
Teams In OC This Week--(Dec. 14, 1999)

We're not in love with media polls.  We prefer the SCIBCA polls, because they're voted on by a committee of coaches and others who generally make it their business to watch the teams involved in a particular division of play. Media polls usually only focus on the Division I or II teams (and occasionally the Division III teams) in a particular geographic region, and thus leave out about half of the good basketball teams who happen to be playing in divisions IV and V (like Verbum Dei, Crossroads, Serra, Price, Santa Clara, Marshall, and so on. . . )  Still, sometimes the media polls have it over other polls when it comes to talking about the "best" teams in a particular region.  The Times usually does it's poll during the season, as does the Daily News, and we haven't seen them yet, but when we do, we'll pass them along.  We've also posted the Fullcourt Press Weekly Top 25, but that's more regional, i.e., all of SoCal (except for most of San Diego), and it's really a different genre than the local newspaper polls, which have a distinctly more parochial flavor to them. Still, it's interesting to see who each paper believes is best in it's area.

Each week, the Orange County Register sportswriters get together and vote on their selections for an area (i.e., Orange County only) "Top 10".  We're not sure exactly who gets to vote, but if we had to guess, we'd say it's Frank Burlison, Steve Fryer, Richard Manfredi, and a few others. . . (oh, and if you check Fryer's column, probably starting next week, he also issues a "next top 10", giving his "if there was a top 20, this is who would be on it. . . ").   The OC Polls came out in today's paper, and in case you're interested in who the sportswriters think are the top 10 teams in the County (boys and girls), here they are:
