1999 S.D. Nike Prep Classic: Classic Division
1st Round Games & Brackets--(Dec. 25, 1999)

What:  1999 Torrey Pines Nike Prep Classic
When:  December 27-December 30, 1999
Where:  3 locations:  Torry Pines High School
San Dieguito Academy & Rancho Bernardo HS
Who:  48 of the top teams from all over the U.S.

Classic Division Games: At Torrey Pines HS Only

This year's Nike Prep Classic will essentially be three separate tournaments, all running simultaneously and pretty much independent of one another, and they'll be played at three separate locations:  The "Classic Division" will be played at Torrey Pines High School;  the Mayor's Cup, will be played at San Dieguito Academy, and finally, the Governor's Trophy will be held at Rancho Bernardo High School.  None of the final games will be played at Cox Arena this year; instead they will all be held at the principal venue for each bracket, thus the event really breaks down into three separate tournaments.

The teams participating in each division are varied; most of them are from SoCal, but there are quite a few from other states and areas outside of SoCal.  In the "Classic" Division, the teams participating are:   Mira Mesa,  Crenshaw, Mater Dei, Robert Service, De La Salle, St. Augustine (SD), Jesuit, Fairfax, USDHS, Salpointe, Torrey Pines, Horizon, St. Dominic's (NY), Oakland Fremont, Alta and Simi Valley.  The bracket is below along with the first round for the Classic Division.  First the schedule.

This bracket has some pretty exciting potential matchups not the least of which is a replay of the Southern Section Divisino IA Championship between between Simi Valley and  Mater Dei (if MD can beat Robert Service earlier in the day, a team that we don't know anything about).  Here's the schedule of games for Monday:

Classic Division, Monday, December 27, 1999
Note: All Games in this Division are at Torrey Pines HS
Time Opponents Game No.
9:00 a.m. Mira Mesa v. Crenshaw T1
10:35 a.m Mater Dei v. Robert Service T2
12:10 p.m. Oakland Fremont v. St. Dominics T3
1:45 p.m. Jesuit v. Fairfax T4
3:20 p.m. USDHS v. Salpointe T5
5:05 p.m. Torrey Pines v. Horizon T6
6:40 p.m. St. Augustine v. Winner T1 T7
8:15 p.m. Simi Valley v. Winner T2 T8

Note that De La Salle and Alta do not play until Tuesday, December 28, at 3:20 p.m. (this is a second round game but the way the brackets are constructed, it's a first rounder for them in the quarterfinals of the championship side (as opposed to the consolation side) of the bracket.  The ewinner immediately advances to the semifinal game, while the loser drops into the 5th place bracket.  We're not sure why this happened, but we're guessing it has something to do with either (a) Alta's or De La Salle's travel restrictions, or a restriction on the number of games they can play.

There was one error we noted in the bracket (or at least we think it's an error, otherwise the bracket makes no sense):  The printed version we were sent had the St. Augustine game as "T7".   Ok, so far so good, but the bracket  then had the winner and loser of game T7 advancing into the lower half of the bracket playing the winner and loser of T8 (which is where T7 would normally go), and while the winner and loser of game T3 (which was switched with T7 in the first round, again we assume for scheduling reasons) supposedly jumping up to the upper half to play the winner and loser of T4 where T3 participants would normally go anyway.   The reason we assume it's an error is that St. Augustine is clearly in the upper half of the bracket in the first round, and they likewise clearly should stay there unless the organizers have some weird sense of seeding priorities, so we assume that someone just used a template from last year and forgot to change the game numbers in the second round.   If we're wrong, hey it's not going to matter much anyway. . . So, we've switched the second round numbers so that they make sense and track the first round matchups.   A slight modification, probably not important to anyone in the real world, but hey, details are important to some of us.

In any event,we'll try to have details daily from the tournament, which might prove difficult, since we're either going to be at the Best in the West, in Santa Barbara for a tournament up there, and in Santa Maria for another tournament.  In other words, we're not going to be in San Diego at all, and we're going to count on our friends and the local media, and tournament organizers to keep us all abreast of what's happening.   So, normally we'd say "See you there," except this time we won't.  But you should go anyway.  The games will be great, and the players and organizers can use your support.
