More On The Bakersfield v.
Washington Union Game--(Dec. 4, 1999)
As a continuing supplement to the original item we posted (which is also contained below), we got an e-mail from one of our friends and readers up in the Bakersfield area who had this to add:
Don't know if you still need this, but here's the stats from the BHS-Wash. Union game. The Californian just posted them, and you can find them electronically at http://www.bakersfield.com/spt/i--1267854227.asp (scroll down a bit). After I send this, I'm gonna call my father, who works as a copy editor for the Californian, and find out what the heck is up with this story not getting the attention it deserves, seeing as how its one of the biggest prep wins, like, ever. And besides, unlike the Bee, no Bakersfield area football teams were playing last night, except for my beloved Garces Rams. Oh well, sorry for the rant, here's the box score:
BHS 78, Washington Union 73

News out of the BCW "Battle of the Central Valley" is pretty hard to get, but before simply posting all the scores and details as we've been doing for all of the tournament and non-league games taking place throughout the SoCal area (or involving SoCal-based teams) we just had to get this posted. It's from the Bakersfield Californian from Saturday, December 4, 1999. No headline on the article, but just part of the local roundup. . . ho hum stuff up in tough-town Bakersfield:
Bakersfield 78, Washington Union 73
FRESNO Bakersfield High defeated defending state Division IV [sic-- they're actually D-III] champion Washington Union 78-73 on Friday to advance to the semi-finals of the Buchanan Tournament."This was back-to-back nights of defeating state champions for us, so we're real pleased," BHS coach Mark Hutson said. [Bakersfield defeated defending State D-I Champion Oakland Fremont the night before].
The Drillers offensive attack was led by Alfred Williams with 33 points, Johnny Wiley with 18 points and Brandon Huggins with 12.
Washington Union was led by Deshawn Stevenson with 34 points and Deshawn Anderson added 21
The Drillers will face Ayala High in the semifinals today at Buchanan High at 2 p.m.
More on this one as soon as we can find something. . . A boxscore would help. . . And considering there's absolutely nothing about this game in the Fresno Bee this morning (there's plenty of football stuff), this must be really big news up in Fresno, so big that they're trying to keep it a secret.
