More Games Today--(Dec. 8, 1999)
Montclair Prep and Milken are both holding small school tournaments; Montclair Prep's (called aptly "The 1st Annual Small School Classic") will continue through Saturday, and while Milken's "Hilltop Classic" (also aptly named because Milken sits atop the hill dividng the City from the Valley on Mulholland) concludes tonight with the Championship game between Milken and Bell-Jeff who both won their semifinal games last night. The finals will be at 7:30 p.m. and will be preceded by the third place game between Oakwood and Buckley. We've already posted the results from yesterday's games, but we'll repost them below. In case you missed them, here are the results from both tournaments from yesterday:
Montclair Prep Tournament-- Results from 12/7/99
Cathedral 52, Viewpoint 44-- Viewpoint (2-3) lost to Cathedral in a game that was closer at times than the final score would indicate, but they trailed 27-14 at the half, and slowly crept back into it outscoring Cathedral 13-9 in the third, but never got closer than 6. Viewpoint had only one player in double figures, Bly with 13. Cathedral was led by Zack Hall with 19 and Chris Duarte with 14. Cathedral improves to 2-3.
Notre Dame 59, Blair 47--Cody Pearson (6'-5" Jr. G) made 14 of 20 shots and scored 30 points with 10 rebounds, three steals and two blocked shots for the Knights in a second-round victory at the Montclair Prep tournament. Michael Luderer had 16 points and nine rebounds for the Knights (3-0).
Price 67, Kilpatrick 38-- Kilpatrick, obviously preoccupied with football (they are in the finals this weekend against Paraclete, which was also without many players at the Milken tournament), struggled and no player reached double figures. On the other hand, the defending Southern Section D-VA champs were firing on all cylinders as Othel Johnson had 13 pints, Jermaine Jamison had 13, Mychal Lyunch scored 9, Chris Alexander had 7, Andre Jones 5, and Howard 13. Price outscored Kilpatrick 17-7 in the first quarter and never looked back. Price is now 1-0 and Kilpatrick is 1-1.
Providence 78, Light & Life 31--Providence was led by Shant Bekmezian with 11 and Derek Jones with 15, to go along with Dino Pedraja's 18 points. Eric Vaca also had 12 for Providence which improves to 4-1 on the season.
Rio Hondo Prep 48, Azusa 45--no details were available.
Milken Tournament Results--December 7, 1999
Bell-Jeff 62, Buckley 54-- Bell-Jeff (2-1) was led by Carlos Arroyo's 27 points and 22 rebounds as the Guards hung on for a tough win over Buckley. Bell Jeff led by three at the start of the second half but scored just 6 points in the third quarter to give Buckley a slim lead at the start of the fourth, which they extended to five. Bell-Jeff made the deficit outscoring Buckley 20-10 in the fourth, most from line as Buckley was forced to foul to stop the clock. Bell-Jeff scorers were Chavez 5, Bunning 4, Gopez 4, Markovic 4, Cabrerra 8, Yildiz 5, and Kealy 5. Buckley (3-1) was led by Colin Ward-Henninger's 25 points and 9 rebounds and David Gale's three points, 10 assists and 6 steals. Alex Clancy, who had been averaging 26 ppg in the prior three contests, with performances of 26 and 30 in the prior two, went cold and only scored 2 from the field. Bell-Jeff meets Milken in the final tonight at 7:30 while Buckley will play league rival Oakwood at 6:00 in the third place game.
Flintridge Prep 58, Paraclete 39-- Flintridge outlasted Paraclete behind Ben Kroop's (6'-9" Sr. SF/C) 25 points and 15 rebounds. Pparaclete had no player in double figures. Flintridge Prep is 2-2 on the season and Paraclete is 0-2. Paraclete will play AGBU in a consolation game today at 3:00 pm
Milken 46, Oakwood 27--Milken (2-1) will meet Bell-Jeff in the final today at 7:30 at Milken. High scorers for the Wildcats last night were Raminfar 14, Greenberg 12, Bassman 10, Hendlish 4, Blitz 2, Milgrim 2, and Powell 2. Oakwood had no scorers in double figures; Stan Musgrave had 6. Daniel Greenberg was injured in the second quarter of the game, continued to play and eventually came out in the third quarter with a hyper-extended knee (or so the reports we've heard have stated. . . we only saw the first injury and he seemed shaken up, but ok to play after that one). He is listed as doubtful for tonight's championship game, which is a shame because he's a tough competitor and without him, Milken will depend on Jon Milgrim, a nice but very young player at the point who will be pressured by Bell-Jeff's full court press.
Pilgrim def AGBU.-- we didn't get the scoring for this one, but Pilgrim won, and will play Flintridge Prep today in the 5th place game at 4:30 p.m.
Milken Hilltop Tournament Results--Day One
Buckley 76, Flintridge Prep 59--Point guard David Gale (6'-0" So. PG) recorded 8 assists, 5 steals and 7 points as the Buckley Griffins (3-0) were paced by the high scoring of Alex Clancy (5'-11" Jr. SG) who hit for 21 points, Colin Ward-Henninger (6'-4" Jr. SG/SF) with 17 and 9 rebounds, Mike Lalazarian (5'-11" Sr. SG) with 15 including 3 three's. Royal Weaver's (5'-10" Jr. PG/SG) scored 11 points late in the fourth quarter to go along with two assists. Others scoring for the Griffins were Steve Broukhim with 4, and Murali Sivalingam with 1 point and 4 blocked shots. Flintridge was led by Ben Kroop (6'-9" Sr. C) who scored 25 points and Bryan Young (5'-10" Jr. G) with 13. Buckley initially trailed 5-0 at the start of the game, but a free throw, a three by Clancy and two steals by Gale broke the game open, and Buckley led 25-14 at the end of the first quarter, and 37-29 at the half. Buckley broke out to lead 48-29 in the third, but then Flintridge made a run late in the third quarter, cutting the lead to just five, as both teams scored 16 in the quarter. But Buckley went with a trapping zone and outscored Flintridge (1-2) 23-14 in the final quarter. Buckley will match up today at 6:00 p.m. in a Division V-AA battle against Bell-Jeff.
Oakwood 52, Pilgrim 47-- Oakwood won the opener in this tournament behind the scoring of Nick Mark (6'-7" Jr. F/C) with 17 points and Stan Musgrave (6'-1" Jr. SG/SF) who had 17. Pilgrim was led by Chris Bailey with 22 points and Rogelio Gomez with 11. Pilgrim will play Paraclete, the loser against Bell-Jeff today at 4:30 p.m. at Milken. Oakwood plays tonight at 7:30 p.m. against host Milken in the winner's bracket.
Bell Jeff 81, Paraclete 45--The outcome of this game was never in doubt as Bell-Jeff cruised to an easy first round win over a depleted Paraclete team which had just 7 players available to play due to Paraclete's continued involvement in the football playoffs (they're in the finals this Saturday). Bell Jeff was led by Carlos Arroyo's 22 points, mostly off of inside putbacks. Five other Bell-Jeff players scored in double figures: Casey Markovic had 10, Rommel Cabrerra had 11, Chris Gopez had 12, Bunning had 11, and Chavez had 10. Every available Bell-Jeff player scored. Paraclete was led by Evan Jeffries (5'-10" Jr. G) with 17, and Drew Gill (5'-10" So. G) who had 14. Bell-Jeff will play Buckley tonight in a second round semifinal game at 6:00 p.m.
Milken 74, AGBU 48--Milken easily defeated an undermanned AGBU team, and improved to 1-1 on the season. Bobby Bassman, Bobby Hendlish and Alex Raminfar all scored 13 points each and Daniel Danishvar scored 10 as Milken was never really tested in this first round game. Daniel Greenberg scored 6 and had 7 assists in the game. Milken led 27-8 at the end of the first quarter and it only got worse from there, and would have stayed bad had Milken not pulled the starters in the fourth quarter, which AGBU actually "won" 15-9. We stayed through the first half, and had then seen enough. . .so the scoring details come from the local papers. Milken will play Oakwood tonight in a second round semifinal game scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Milken.
