Montclair Prep & Milken Tournaments
Second Round Games Today--(Dec. 7, 1999)

Several big games between the D-IV and D-V schools today at the Montclair Prep and Milken Tournaments, which between them have most of the small schools in the Valley region of the Southern Section of CIF playing in their respective 16 and 8 team tournaments, both of which started yesterday and continue today.   There will be several excellent matchups today, and if you're anywhere near the Valley, or not otherwise engaged down in Orange County at the Ocean View Tournament of Champions, you might want to check out some of these games:

Notre Dame v. Blair--4:00 p.m. @ Montclair Prep--A newly rejuvenated and successful Notre Dame team, which went to double overtime against Bell-Jeff on Saturday night at Bell-Jeff, won yesterday, defeating Providence.  Key players for Notre Dame: Cody Pearson (who scored 25 yesterday), Mike Luderer (19 points yesterday), and Ruben Sanchez (a ton of assists).  Blair has Darryl Strawberry, Jr., who will be making his debut in a real game (yesterday Blair won on a forfeit) back at Montclair Prep where he used to attend school.

Price v. Kilpatrick --5:30 p.m. @ Montclair Prep-- Price is the defending Southern Section Champions in Division V-A, and they return virtually everyone.  Kilpatrick, which has been preoccupied with football lately, has some excellent athletes, but we really don't know because this school (which is a boys' juvenile detention center where DeAngelo Collins will be lucky to live next year) changes it's roster each year as required by the CIF as a condition of participating in CIF sports.  Price's key players:  Djbril N'Diaye (6'-2" Jr. F), Chris Alexander (6'-3" Jr. G), Jermaine Jamerson (6'-4" Jr. F), Mychal Lynch (6'-1" Sr. G), Aaron Allen (6'-0" Sr. G), Daniel Michael (6'-5" Sr. C), Andrew Howard (6'-0" Jr. G), Jason Walker (6'-0" Sr. F/G) and Othel Johnson (6'-5" Sr. F)

Buckley v. Bell- Jeff  6:00 p.m. @ Milken Community- - Buckley won yesterday against Flintridge Prep and will matchup against Division V-AA rival Bell-Jeff.  Buckley will be led by David Gale (9 apg, 7.6 spg), Colin Ward-Henninger (23 ppg, 10 rbg), and Alex Clancy who is averaging 25 ppg, and some quickness from Royal Weaver, Mike Lalazerian (15 ppg) and shot blocking from Murali Sivalingam.  Bell-Jeff will counter with the inside presence of Carlos Arroyo (6'-6" Sr. PF) who scored 22 yesterday against Paraclete, and fine guard play from Casey Markovic, Chris Gopez, Rommel Cabrerra, and Tyler Kealy.

Milken v. Oakwood--@ Milken Community --Milken has some of the best guard play in the region, with top point guard Daniel Greenberg, two man Bobby Hendlish, and inside scoring from Alex Raminfar and Bobby Bassman.   Oakwood's Nick Mark, at 6'-7" should get a workout with the running style of the Milken Wildcats, who also like to run a half-court trap just about every time down the floor against teams who aren't as quick as they are.  Oakwood has some other good scorers too, like Stan Musgrave.

La Salle v. Yeshiva --8:30 p.m.  @ Montclair Prep--Yeshiva had a rough time of it yesterday, but pulled out the win by 2 points over Azusa, while La Salle was never really tested against Rio Hondo Prep.   Yeshiva key players: Avi Hami (5'-8" Sr. SG), a good scorer, penetrator and outside shooter; Adam Missry  (5'-7" Sr.G) the team's leading scorer last year and a team leader, and Kenny Pollack, who had  22 points against Azusa yesterday. La Salle features Jason Kenoyer, Tommy Remillard and Albert Aquino.

Here are the schedules for both tournaments for today, December 7, 1999

Milken Hilltop Tournament Results--Day One

Buckley 76, Flintridge Prep 59--Point guard David Gale (6'-0" So. PG) recorded 8 assists, 5 steals and 7 points as the Buckley Griffins (3-0) were paced by the high scoring of Alex Clancy (5'-11" Jr. SG) who hit for 21 points, Colin Ward-Henninger (6'-4" Jr. SG/SF) with 17 and 9 rebounds, Mike Lalazarian (5'-11" Sr. SG) with 15 including 3 three's. Royal Weaver's (5'-10" Jr. PG/SG) scored 11 points late in the fourth quarter to go along with two assists.  Others scoring for the Griffins were Steve Broukhim with 4, and Murali Sivalingam with 1 point and 4 blocked shots.  Flintridge was led by Ben Kroop (6'-9" Sr. C) who scored 25 points and Bryan Young (5'-10" Jr. G) with 13.   Buckley initially trailed 5-0 at the start of the game, but a free throw, a three by Clancy and two steals by Gale broke the game open, and Buckley led 25-14 at the end of the first quarter, and 37-29 at the half.  Buckley broke out to lead 48-29 in the third, but then Flintridge made a run late in the third quarter, cutting the lead to just five, as both teams scored 16 in the quarter.  But Buckley went with a trapping zone and outscored Flintridge (1-2) 23-14 in the final quarter.  Buckley will match up today at 6:00 p.m. in a Division V-AA battle against Bell-Jeff.

Oakwood 52, Pilgrim 47-- Oakwood won the opener in this tournament behind the scoring of Nick Mark (6'-7" Jr. F/C) with 17 points and Stan Musgrave (6'-1" Jr. SG/SF) who had 17.   Pilgrim was led by Chris Bailey with 22 points and Rogelio Gomez with 11.  Pilgrim will play Paraclete, the loser against Bell-Jeff today at 4:30 p.m. at Milken.  Oakwood plays tonight at 7:30 p.m. against host Milken in the winner's bracket.

Bell Jeff 81, Paraclete 45--The outcome of this game was never in doubt as Bell-Jeff cruised to an easy first round win over a depleted Paraclete team which had just 7 players available to play due to Paraclete's continued involvement in the football playoffs (they're in the finals this Saturday).   Bell Jeff was led by Carlos Arroyo's 22 points, mostly off of inside putbacks.   Five other Bell-Jeff players scored in double figures:  Casey Markovic had 10, Rommel Cabrerra had 11, Chris Gopez had 12,  Bunning had 11, and Chavez had 10.   Every available Bell-Jeff player scored.  Paraclete was led by Evan Jeffries (5'-10" Jr. G) with 17, and Drew Gill (5'-10" So. G) who had 14.  Bell-Jeff will play Buckley tonight in a second round semifinal game at 6:00 p.m.

Milken 74, AGBU 48--Milken easily defeated an undermanned AGBU team, and improved to 1-1 on the season.  Bobby Bassman, Bobby Hendlish and Alex Raminfar all scored 13 points each and Daniel Danishvar scored 10 as Milken was never really tested in this first round game.  Daniel Greenberg scored 6 and had 7 assists in the game.  Milken led 27-8 at the end of the first quarter and it only got worse from there, and would have stayed bad had Milken not pulled the starters in the fourth quarter, which AGBU actually "won" 15-9.  We stayed through the first half, and had then seen enough. . .so the scoring details come from the local papers.  Milken will play Oakwood tonight in a second round semifinal game scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Milken.

Montclair Prep Tournament Results--Day One

La Salle 68, Rio Hondo Prep 38-- La Salle (2-0) easily advanced with a win over Rio Hondo Prep (0-2) behind the scoring of Tommy Remillard who finished with 12.  Virtually everyone on the La Salle roster scored:   Albert Aquino 5, Steve Van Leeuwen 8, Jason Kenoyer 9, Matt Kelley 9, Robert Summer 5, Joey Williams 6, Mike Gordon 4, Austin Richey 6, and Chris Rakiewicz.   Rio Hondo scoring:  Aman 2, Prest 8, DeLeon 9, Tashkesen 6, Buchanan 3, Dinius 6, Heady 2, and Hampton 2.

Notre Dame (Sherman Oaks) 63, Providence 46-- Mike Luderer scored 19 points and grabbed 9 boards while Cody Pearson topped all scorers with 25 and 11 rebounds as Notre Dame improved to 2-0 and Providence dropped to 2-1   David Hungerford also grabbed 13 boards for Notre Dame and scored 8 points.   Ruben Sanchez scored 4, while Barwick had 12 and Calkins 6.  Providence managed to have three players in double figures:  Shant Bekmezian with 14, Pierre Kascinta 13, and Derek Jones 13.  Others scoring for Providence were Escobedo 3, and Pedraja with 3.  Notre Dame held a 3 point lead at the end of the first quarter, 12-9, and then trailed at the half as Providence led 25-23.  But in the third quarter, the Knights exploded, outscoring Providence 23-14 to take the lead. In the fourth quarter, Notre Dame outscored Providence 17-7.  Notre Dame will advance to the second round of the Championship side of the 16-team bracket and will play Blair, which won a forfeit game when Light & Life Christian failed to show.
