Montclair Prep & Milken Tournaments
To Start Today--(Dec. 6, 1999)

Since we've published the master guide to Tournaments in SoCal, you'll notice that there are really only two predominantly small school, Division IV and V tournaments scheduled to start today, Monday, December 6.

One is the Montclair Prep Tournament, which is the larger of the two will feature Montclair Prep, Kilpatrick, Price (the defending Southern Section Champions in Division V-A), Malibu, Providence, Viewpoint, Notre Dame, Azusa, Rio Hondo Prep, Cathedral, La Salle, and Lighthouse Christian.   We don't have a schedule for this one, but you'll see some of the better teams in Division V-A (Lighthouse, Rio Hondo & Price) and V-AA (Montclair Prep, Viewpoint, Cathedral), as well as several good D-IVA (La Salle, Malibu, Providence, Notre Dame, etc.)

The other, and smaller tournament is the Milken HS 2nd Annual Hill Top Classic, which has just had a slight shuffle of teams to add Bell-Jeff and drop Stoneridge Prep.  Here's the first round schedule for the Milken Wildcat Tourney:

December 6,  Monday

3:00 p.m.  Oakwood v. Pilgrim
4:30 p.m.  Paraclete v. Bell-Jeff
6:00 p.m.  Buckley v. Flintridge Prep
7:30 p.m.  AGBU v. Milken

Here's what we know about these teams:

Buckley: Coming off two huge wins, the first a 118-44 win over Glendale Adventist and an 88-23 win over Rio Hondo Prep (which is in the Montclair Prep tournament). Buckley is led by Colin Ward Henninger (6'-4" Jr. SG/SF) who is averaging 26 ppg (33 in game 1 and 19 in the second), Alex Clancy (5'-11" Jr. SG) who scored 30 in the Rio Hondo game, including 8 three pointers, and point guard David Gale (6'-0" So. PG) who is averaging 10 ppg, 10 assists per game, and 8 steals over the first two contests. Buckley is also strong down low with Simon Leonov, Murali Sivalingam, and good guard play from Royal Weaver, Mike Lalazarian, and Steve Broukhim. Adam Pastor, a senior combo guard is still out with a fracture in his foot.

Oakwood:  A Liberty League rival of Buckley's Oakwood has not done very well the last few years, and hopes to change all that with their newly constructed multi-million dollar gym. But they'll need to get bigger play from guys like Stan Musgrave and Nick Mark (6'-7" Jr. F/C) than they had last season.

Bell-Jeff: A late tournament entry (after the Orangewood Academy Tournament was canceled last week), we've already done a preview of Bell-Jeff for this season.  They feature Carlos Arroyo, Mike Yildiz, Casey Markovic, Tyler Kealy, Rommel Cabrerra, and several other excellent athletes.  Buckley and Bell-Jeff are in the same bracket and will match up tomorrow evening if they both win.

Milken: Certainly favored to win their own bracket, the Wildcats have Daniel Greenberg (5'-10" Sr. PG), Bobby Bassman (6'-5" Sr. PF), Alex Raminfar (6'-4" Sr. SF/SG), and several other really quick, talented players. We saw them last week against Montclair Prep, and they were surprisingly good against the Mounties, losing by only three points in the final seconds of the game when they were forced into a fouling situation to stop the clock.

We don't know a lot about Paraclete, Flintridge Prep or AGBU this year, but we'll find out today.
