Iolani Classic: Wash.Union Loses;
Dominguez Wins--(Dec. 21, 1999)
We want to thank the anonymous poster on our Men's Message Forum who alerted us to the Iolani Prep Classic website, and while the statistics weren't working (the links to the stats for each game are evidently broken) so we can't tell what happened, it's at least nice to get pictures and timely scores. We'll check back later when they've got the stats posted so we can see what really happened. But at least we have the scores from yesterday's games in the tournament:
Kapaa 43, St. Louis 51
Waianae 14, Roosevelt 37
Iolani 58, Mckinley 43
Baldwin 39, Radford 63
E. Anchorage 49, Oakhill 71
Central-AR 63, Washington Union 55
Dominguez 34, Provo 19
Wilson 47 Montrose 53
Ok, so does any of that really mean much to any of us stuck over here on the mainland? Well, from a bracketing point of view, the only real upset was the loss by Washington Union, and then we're not sure just how much of a real "upset" this game was. Neither team is ranked this season, either in their region or nationally by USA Today's Dave Krider, although many have said that Central, a team which is perennially ranked in most polls, is still a better overall team than Washington Union, which is now really struggling early against tough national-level competition.
The wins yesterday by Dominguez (No. 12 USA Today), Central, Oak Hill (No. 4 USA Today) and Montrose (No. 8 USA Today) set up some really interesting matchups. Oak Hill will play Central today at 6:30 p.m. (Hawaii time, so it's actually at 9:30 pm. PS, and really 12:30 a.m. the next day for the guys from Virginia), and Dominguez will matchup against Montrose in a battle of the rated teams. And while we can't guarantee that somebody's ranking is going to go up, you can bet that whoever loses will go down in the next poll.
