Here's what we know about the teams:
Baldwin Park: will be without 6'-5" center Andrew Drumm, but the Braves still have scoring with seniors David Cordero, Steven Reese and Roland Sanchez. Twins Cliff and Alan Hy, and Edgar Ontiveros provide backcourt depth.
Bassett :lost the area's second-leading scorer, Steve Albitre, and almost all of its rotation to graduation, so they will be a complete mystery.
Brea Olinda: We've already done a preview of this team here at SoCalHoops. They'll contend for their league title, but had difficulty with Horizon Christian on Saturday at the Westchester Comet Pride Classic doubleheader at LA Southwest College, losing 74-46.
Charter Oak: senior starters Jonathan Jones (6'-4" Sr. F) and point guard DeJuan Croom provide the nucleus for what should be an improved team. Sharif Elkhaldy, who was second on the team in points, rebounds and assists as a freshman, also returns and, according to coach Randy Thatcher, has made great strides. Nick Brown (6'-6"), Justin Lozano (6'-5") and South Hills transfer Justin Perri give the Chargers size; junior David Boler possibly the school's best all-around athlete adds an athletic dimension.
Covina: Coach Eric Pontier isn't shy about saying his team will contend for a playoff spot, even though they've gone winless for two years in a row in league play. Chris Evangelista (6'-4" Sr. SG) should help; he missed most of last season with mononucleosis. Ocosy Ndubaku (6'-2" Sr. F) is also back. The Colts are aided by Temple City transfers Simba and A.J. Vaughn, who along with talented sophomore Vernon Covington, will provide a good backcourt.
Glendora: They've done it again, and seemingly reloaded with a bunch of "no-name" guys, at least in comparison to the Clark twins and all-time Southern Section scorer Casey Jacobsen who graduated this past June. Senior guard Jason Davis, a part-time starter last season, figures to be the Tartans' main scorer this season. Point guard Bruce Hatch and 6-6 center Duncan Reid return, and Scott Giles and Graham Miller will have expanded roles. Guard Lauren Smith has transferred in from South Hills and should also figure heavily in the rotation. Sophomores Michael Mehanna and Spencer Foster and 6-5 senior Charlie Allen are the main additions from lower-level teams. They went 10 deep last week in their third of the Glendora Triple Crown and easily beat Orange 65-52. The roster features Brandon Rohrer (6'-0" Sr. G) Scott Giles (6'-1" Sr. G), Tim Torbron (5'-10" Sr. G), Scott Stowell (5'-9" Sr. G), Lauren Smith (5'-10" Jr. G), Gilbert Dickason (5'-8" Sr. G), Jason Davis (6'-3" Sr. SG/SF), Michael Mehanna (6'-1" So. G), Spencer Foster (6'-4" So. F), Bruce Hatch (6'-2" Sr. PG/SG), Ernie Alvarez (5'-8" Jr. G), Graham Miller (6'-4" Sr. SG/SF), Charlie Allen (6'-5" Sr. F), Joe Degrassi (6'-5" Sr. F) and Duncan Reid (6'-7" Sr. F/C).
Ontario: We're not exactly sure who will be on the team, but we do have their summer roster from the Best in the West Summer Tournament, which featured Karl Ivory (6'-0" Sr. G), Jonathan Levy (6'-5" Sr. F), Jason Burrell (6'-2" Sr. SG), Ricardo Miereles (6'-0" Sr. G), Randall Brannon (5'-9" Sr. G), David Dunn (6'-3" So. SG/SF), Jarreau Rasheed (5'-8" Jr. G), Jevonte Moffett (6'-1" Sr. G), Brian Thompson (6'-1" Sr. G), Marlon Mitchell (6'-1" Jr. G), Andrew Alhadeff (6'-3" Jr. G/F), Brandon Kinney (6'-2" Jr. G/F), Paul Riley (6'-1" Sr. G), and Lenton Butler (6'-3" Sr. F). Interestingly, we have no idea how they're doing right now and can't find a thing on them.
South Hills--The Valle Vista League race will be tight with South Hills on San Dimas' heels with what coach Paul Reed calls his best team in his eight seasons. The Huskies went 17-9, reached the Division III-AA quarterfinals and return an excellent backcourt of Torry Stewart and Kraig Smith. Smith was a second-team All-CIF pick, averaging 15 points per game. Gary Enriquez (6-4) and Matt Froid (6-6) add quality depth down low. Senior Miguel Garcia, an exchange student from Spain, brings a European-style game to the Huskies. Junior Joaquin Baker might be the team's best shooter.
Not a bad lineup. In fact it's pretty good. You'll definitely want to check this one out. Glendora is located at 1600 East Foothill Blvd, Glendora, CA, just off the 210 Freeeway. Exit at Auto Center Drive and take that North to Lone Hill Road, then turn right on Foothill and continue until you get to the school. Here's a map so you can find your way there without getting lost:
