Glendora Triple Crown:
Other One Thirds Now In--(Dec. 2, 1999)

Last night, our friend, sometime summer travel partner, co-coach, and infrequent correspondent Lee Garson took the trip  out to Glendora to report on the Glendora Triple Crown games, and he managed to get two out of three, which ain't bad.  So we had to wait for the papers this morning to find out what happened with the Glendora v. Orange game, and the San Gabriel Valley Tribune had it on their front page. . .big news. The story was by Gabe Lacques, a staff writer for the paper, and we've excerpted those portions which only relate principally to the game we didn't report on last night.  Here's what we know:

Tartans impress; Nobles heartened

GLENDORA --The gymnasium at Glendora High School was a construction site of sorts Wednesday night, as the host Tartans and Nogales began their boys basketball rebuilding projects at the Triple Crown Challenge.  And while the Tartans, missing three starters and one All-American from last year's 31-3 team, didn't miss a beat in trouncing Orange, 65-52, Nogales was knocked off by Ocean View, 76-60.

Glendora, playing its first game without four-year starters Chris Clark, Chad Clark and Casey Jacobsen, had three players, led by senior Graham Miller's
19 points, in double figures. The Tartans twice led by 25 points before Orange, behind Blake Dodge's 37 points, scored 16 consecutive points to make the final score respectable.   "I've been looking forward to this since my freshman year," said Miller, who made four 3-point baskets. "Casey's always been ahead of me. This year, we've got fast guys, we've got bigger guys, we can change it up depending on the opponents."

Indeed, the Tartans went 10-deep early in the game and utilized a roster bolstered by seldom-used but varsity-seasoned players like Miller and Scott Giles. Returning starters Jason Davis and Bruce Hatch contributed 13 and 8 points, while Charlie Allen, a senior who played on the junior varsity last season, had 10.  The Tartans took control of the game at the outset of the second quarter by scoring 12 consecutive points and 18 of 21 in the quarter overall. Davis had eight points in the decisive spurt.

And just for the sake of comparison with our own report, here's what Lacques wrote about the Nogales game:

Despite Nogales' loss, Nobles coach Bob Withers was heartened by his team's effort. Nogales was routed by Rancho Cucamonga, 83-53, Monday night and Withers said it will take some time for his new team to gel.  "There's no doubt," he said. "Last night, 12 Nobles put on that uniform for the first time. But the thing I like is, we've got talent and some good athletes. We played the fifth-ranked team in the Inland Empire and the ninth-ranked team in Orange County.   "I'll have to fire the guy who made the schedule."  The Nobles battled back from sizable deficits on several occasions, most notably at the end of the first half. They trailed 37-27 with 1:23 left, but a 3-pointer by Mark Pagdilao and a free throw at the buzzer by John Chen brought them within 37-33 at halftime.   But Nogales had no answer for Ocean View's final rally. After Chen's 3-pointer brought the Nobles within 60-56 with 4:37 left in the game, Ocean View scored 16 of the game's final 20 points. Marques Crane scored six of his game-high 23 points in the run.   Ron Quinine led four Nogales players in double figures with 14 points. Pagdilao and Aaron Boyd had 12 each and Chen had 11.  "I'm pleased," Withers said. "Our kids came back and played a good ballgame. We never had the lead, and that's always difficult when you're trying to come back. The thing I was disappointed with was we got them to take some bad shots, but then they got some offensive rebounds.  The thing I like is, we've got good athletes and good attitudes."

Lacques' article also reminded us that Wednesday's game was the first of three events at Glendora this month. The Tartans will host tournaments Dec. 8-11 and Dec. 13-18, and Nogales will be at the Arroyo Tournament starting on Monday.
