Today must be the day for announcements about MLK, Jr., weekend events.  First we got the details for the adidas Double Pump Hoop Challenge which will be held at Long Beach City College on Saturday, January 15, 2000.

Then we went over to Fullcourt Press, Dinos Trigonis' new website, and found an announcement for the 6th Annual Nike Dream Classic, which will be held two days later, on Monday, January 17, 2000, which is actually MLK, Jr., Day.

Previous editions of the Nike Dream Classic have been held at UCLA's Pauley Pavilion. This year, the event is at the Pyramid at Long Beach State a great event for watching hoops, and some even say, a better basketball arena than Pauley.  We're not sure about that, but we are sure that these will be eight of the best games you're likely to see over the weekend.  Here's the schedule

9:00 a.m

The Bishops School (La Jolla) vs. Dudley (Greensboro NC)

10:35 a.m.

Ayala (Chino Hills) vs. Manual Arts (Los Angeles)

12:05 p.m.

You'll get a chance to see some of the top players in SoCal, including Nick Booker, Chris Pacana, Travon Bryant, Isaiah Fox, Felipe Williams, Jason Morrissette, Scottie Stern, Evan Burns, Craig Smith, Chad Bell, Jason Breland, Tommy Johnson, Chris Davis, E.J. Harris, DeMarcus Williams, Kirk Snyder, Jamal Sampson, Cedric Bozeman, Steve Scoggin, Harrison Schaen, Chris Walton, Kam Walton, Tyson Chandler, Keith Brooks, Sherman Gay, Amaury Fernandez, Jack Martinez, Jon Steffanson, Josh Childress, Edwin Draughan, Errick Craven, Derrick Craven, DeVaughn Peace, Brian Pruitt, Kenny D'Oyen, and many, many more. Some really interesting team matchups that you're not likely to see again anywhere else, including during league or playoff action as teams from different CIF divisions matchu:   Dominguez (D-II) v. Artesia (D-I), Ayala (D-I) v. Manual (City Section), an interstate matchup between Bishops and the team from North Carolina; D-I LB Jordan and Travon Bryant matching up against D-IV Crossroads and Isaiah Fox. . . Mater Dei, possibly the No. 1 team in SoCal against D-III potential champion USDHS from San Diego; and finally the running and gunning of Bishop Montgomery against the smooth shooting an versatile offensive skills of the Mayfair Monsoons. . . very good matchups you won't see anywhere else.

Arrive early because this one could be standing room only. Seating will be unreserved, on a first-come first-served basis.

See you there.
